Loser, Totes Gebirge

View of Loser massif in Totes Gebirge (= Dead mountain range) from Schoenberg peak (alt. 2.090 metres) north of it. Loser is 1.838 metres high and easy accessible from south via toll road to 1.600 metres. Totes Gebirge is part of Northern Limestone Alps. Behind it in background is the Schladminger Tauern range with most prominent summits of Hochgolling and Hochwildstelle, both over 2.700 metres high.
Altausee is a small village set in a beautiful valley on the shores of Lake Altausee. This is the heart of Austria, and close to the centre point of the mountainous country. The village of less than 2,000 inhabitants is picture postcard perfect, with well maintained wooden houses, almost all bedecked with flower boxes and hanging baskets. Not a country to live in if you don't have green fingers, I feel! On Sunday, the locals mostly wear their best leaderhosen, trachten jackets and
dirndls, creating a scene straight out of the Sound of Music. This is a spa resort, and the fantastic hiking and cycling trails means that it is a bustling local tourism destination.
