Yellow Mountain House: Colorful 3BR Desert Retreat

Summary:
Wake up to 360° mountain views and fall asleep under some of the darkest skies in Texas. This colorful 3-bedroom, 2-bath Terlingua retreat is designed for connection with two king bedrooms, two twin beds, a fully equipped kitchen, and expansive outdoor living spaces perfect for cooking, gathering, and stargazing. Just a 15-minute drive from Big Bend National Park, it’s the ideal adventure base for groups of friends, couples, or families who want to experience the desert in comfort and style.

The Space:
Colorful 3BR desert retreat in Terlingua with 360° mountain views, a massive outdoor patio, and star-filled skies. Perfect for groups or families exploring Big Bend who want to cook, gather, and soak up the beauty of the desert.

• Outdoor Oasis: A massive patio with a fire ring surrounded by six Adirondack chairs, a covered outdoor kitchen (deep basin sink, fridge, Weber BBQ pit), and a 12-person dining table. Perfect for yoga at sunrise, a campfire at night, and endless stargazing.
• Bedrooms & Baths: Two king bedrooms with blackout curtains and striking mountain views, plus a third bedroom with two twin beds. Two full bathrooms with large showerheads for your group’s comfort. The bathroom shared by the two king bedrooms has in-floor heating.
• Living Areas: Two indoor living rooms provide plenty of space to relax and socialize.
• Indoor Kitchen: Fully equipped and designed with a long buffet counter and picture windows to bring the outside in.
• Views: Christmas Mountains from the back patio, Yellow Mountain from the kitchen and drive, and desert vistas in every direction.

Two important considerations:
1) High clearance vehicles are recommended. The final mile of the drive to the house is on rocky roads with some small hills and some loose rock. A typical sedan can make the drive if the driver is cautious.
2) The rental consists of two separate buildings, connected by a large patio space. This may be of concern to some guests, especially families with small children. See the floorplan in the photos for reference.

LOCAL AREA:
Located on 20 private and seclude acres with unspoiled mountain views and dark skies.
12 miles (15 minutes) to the Maverick Junction entrance to Big Bend National Park or the historic Terlingua Ghost Town

A NOTE FROM THE PROPERTY OWNERS:

As locals, we love this land and built this home with care to reflect the vibrant spirit of the Big Bend region. It’s colorful, a little quirky, and full of heart — just like the desert itself. We hope you’ll feel welcome here, and that your time under these wide-open skies leaves you rested, inspired, and connected.

  • The Rio Grande River winds 12 miles down Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park, Texas. When the water is high you can come down the 1,500 foot walled canyon. With less water flowing, guides take you 3 to 4 miles up the canyon with some spots having to portage. But take it all in stride because the views are breathtaking. I recommend Big Bend River Tours. You might get lucky and have the guides that take you a half mile up a side canyon. An excellent day excursion in the out of the way national park.

  • The Closed Canyon hike in Big Bend Ranch State Park was completely deserted when we went on a Tuesday in April. We hiked further than the 0.7 mile indicated on the signage, and ended up scooting and scrambling up the most interesting narrow and smooth chutes. We heard the song of the elusive canyon wren, too. Amazing. Visit our blog post to hear it and see more!

Host was great. Very responsive to concerns. Actually fixed a roof noise concern within a few hours of finding out about it. The property was very unique in a great way. It was perfect for our family of 5. Close to Big Bend and Terlingua.

Beautiful, private and quiet location. The house was cozy, clean, and the attention to detail in the decor was such a nice touch. Comfy beds and the whole house was furnished perfectly for ease of use. Teen son enjoyed the family board games avaliable. Good, hot showers! We enjoyed the mountain views next to the fire pit and got to see a covey of quail every morning and evening! Was an amazing way to ring in the new year! This place won't disappoint!
