Tabarka is a small town on the Mediterranean coast of northwestern Tunisia between the sea and the mountains, 3 hours from the capital Tunis and the Tunis-Carthage airport. The charm of Tabarka is very different from the mass tourism of other cities. Its name is of Berber origin and etymologically means "the land of heather" and it is one of the greenest regions of Tunisia. Likely to appeal to a diverse clientele, it will seduce golf enthusiasts with the course of Tabarka between mountain and sea, surprising thrills of a mix of pine trees, flowering shrubs, lake and sea views at the foot of the cliffs. It is a tourist town known for marine diving activities (bottom fish or grouper fishing and lobster) and coral used in jewellery. Fishing, quad biking, horse riding, water sports, etc. are other activities offered in the area. It is an ideal place for hiking on the beach, in the forest or in the surrounding hills. In addition, its beautiful beaches make Tabarka an ideal holiday spot for the family. The town is also known for its festivals including the famous Tabarka Jazz Festival (scheduled for August (phone number hidden)). The town is dominated by a rock on which a Genoese fort is built. In Tabarka, a walk much appreciated locally, and through the typical streets of the town and the outskirts of Fort Genoese which overlook the 15th century coast and the famous needles: a set of high rocks of almost 20 metres to arrive at the new open-air theatre. Ain Draham, 15 km away, Hammam Bourguiba has hot thermal springs, and famous for its sulphurous waters which offer courses of care for respiratory and joint problems. Also visit the Museum of Liège which is in the centre of Tabarka, to learn all about the extraction and processing of this versatile material. On the way to Tabarka, make a stop at Sejnane, a house with many storks' nests. Leaving the village, you can stop to buy the pottery of Berber origin. Tabarka is also perfectly located for excursions to famous archaeological sites in the surrounding area including Bulla Regia, Chemtou and Dougga.
