Sunset Park Beach is a scenic sandy strand, with live music and a communal vibe. Locals and visitors often gather together on the beach at sunset and perform a song about the Florida Keys. The park is a popular spot for weddings and other social events.
Walk along the rear of the strand, taking in the glorious scenery between palm trees swaying in the breeze. Take a break on one of the benches dotted along the beach, some of which sit beneath thatched tiki umbrellas.
Stroll along the charming dock that stretches over the water and notice the varying hues of blue in the sea. Dangle your legs over the side and dip your feet in the water. Lifeguards do not patrol this stretch of sand and crocodiles have been known to appear here, so swimming is not permitted.
Stay to watch the sun disappear beyond the horizon and marvel as the sky turns dark red. With luck, a group of singers will treat you to a live rendition of The Islands of Marathon by local songwriter John Bartus. Put your vocal chords to the test by joining the locals in the sing-a-long in this romantic and friendly setting.
Sunset Park Beach stands in the southwestern corner of the Key Colony Beach municipality, in the heart of the Florida Keys archipelago. Drive southwest from Islamorada for 30 miles (50 kilometers) to get here in about 40 minutes. Drop off your car in the parking lot at the back of the beach.
The park is open to the public for free at all times. While in the area, visit surrounding attractions such as the Coupon Bight Aquatic Preserve, the Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters and Curry Hammock State Park.
