The best area to stay in Steinar is the area around the main harbour, which offers the most convenient access to local amenities and scenic views.

This central area is where you'll find the majority of Steinar's shops, restaurants, and tour operators. It's very walkable, with the harbour itself being a focal point for activities like boat trips and whale watching excursions. The main street, Hafnargata, runs parallel to the waterfront and is lined with local businesses.

For couples, staying near the harbour is ideal. You'll be within easy reach of intimate dining spots and can enjoy romantic strolls along the waterfront, perhaps catching the northern lights if the conditions are right. Many accommodations in this area offer rooms with excellent sea views.

Travellers looking for an efficient base for exploring the Southern Region will also find this area perfect.

The best time to go to Steinar is during the summer months, from June to August, for longer daylight hours and milder weather.

During this period, the average temperature is around 10-13°C, and you'll experience the phenomenon of the midnight sun, with daylight lasting almost 24 hours. This makes it ideal for exploring the natural wonders of the Southern Region, like the nearby Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, or venturing out for glacier hikes and black sand beach explorations.

Couples looking for an active holiday will find these months perfect. The extended daylight allows for more time to enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding, and sightseeing without feeling rushed. It's also the best time for whale watching tours from nearby coastal towns.

For those interested in seeing the Northern Lights, the shoulder seasons of late September to early April offer the best chances. While the weather is colder and days are shorter, the darker skies provide a clearer view of this natural spectacle.
