A golden statue with a palace and a mountain behind highlight the importance of this individual. Stand in front of the monument to sense his significance.

See the Statue of Sejong the Great, the 15th-century ruler during Korea’s Joseon Dynasty. His ongoing effect on citizens makes him seem current, as he created the Korean alphabet, known as Hangul. The inscription on the monument is written in Hangul letters that were developed to be simpler than Chinese and, in turn, helped to increase literacy. The statue’s smile and extended arm suggest he was a ruler who cared about his subjects.

Notice the sundial, rain gauge and celestial globe that were also inventions of this scholarly king. Seoul wanted to create a landmark to honor him. In 2009 the statue was unveiled in the newly developed Gwanghwamun Square in the city center. Learn about Korea’s rich history in this space, which is a gathering place and commercial hub.

Walk behind the statue to see six columns with golden inscriptions of the king’s biggest achievements during his reign. He was instrumental in development in the areas of agriculture, science, technology, literature and the military. Visit the exhibition hall underground for additional information about the king and Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who is also commemorated with a monument in the square.

King Sejong ruled from 1418 to 1450 as the fourth king during the Joseon Dynasty. Gaze upon this impressive 31-foot (9.5 meter) bronze statue to understand how Seoul’s people are reminded of the king’s achievements when they view this memorial. The statue is aptly located in front of Gyeongbokgung Palace at the outer boundary of the square.

While visiting the Statue of Sejong the Great, walk through the pedestrian Gwanghwamun Square to see the Admiral Yi Sun-sin statue and enjoy other features of this area. Look for the Waterways of History on the sides of the square with water flowing over tiles inscribed with historical facts. Flower gardens and fountains punctuate the square and events are held frequently. The Cheonggyecheon Stream Connector is an alternative walkway through the square that travels past a waterway while buildings of the city’s downtown rise overhead.
