Historic Property close to South Beach and downtown - Lower Unit

The Indiana School will be your home-base for family fun. The schoolhouse is 2 blocks from Kids Corner park, 3 blocks from the blue stairs access to South Beach, and 7 blocks from downtown restaurants and shopping. The lower unit has 4 themed bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, and sleeps 12 comfortably. The massive great room provides plenty of space for families to spread out, play pool, or watch TV. The Detention room offers a separate space for the kids to watch TV and play board games. The large front yard gives your family more time to play in the sun. A propane grill and fire pit with seating is available for your use. There is plenty of parking at the property.

For large families, this unit can be combined with the upper unit for an additional 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, TV room, and another huge great room with foosball table. Rent the whole house for a week your family will never forget. See VRBO #858708.

Built in 1898, the Indiana School served as an elementary school until 2005. The schoolhouse underwent extensive remodeling in 2006. Many of the original finishes have been preserved including chalk boards, transom doors, wood paneling, and teacher's closets. Updates, painting, and all new furnishings were done in 2016. New windows, brick restoration, exterior painting, and heating/cooling improvements were made in 2023-24. The Indiana School has been designated as a historical site by the State of Michigan. The schoolhouse is truly a unique home.

Our weekly rentals run FRIDAY to FRIDAY. Check-in time is 4:00pm. Check-out time is 10:00am.

Vacation was enjoyed by everyone!

This was a perfect place for our larger family. We enjoyed the large family room so we can all hang out together! Being within a few block to the park and beach was definitely a plus. We will definitely be returning.

Wonder week in SoHa!

We had a fantastic time at the Old Indiana School House! It was so cool to see the history of the property while staying in such a well done and very clean rented space. We loved the location-close to the beach and to downtown. We enjoyed walking to get coffee, meals, and of course, ice cream! Such a wonderful week long vacation in South Haven!

Family memories

Always enjoy coming here for a family together time for Thanksgiving. This place is large enough for our entire family to be together but also enough areas for privacy or to rest and relax.

Fantastic getaway with friends!

This is our third stay at the Indiana Schoolhouse and we are ready to book again for next year. It's the perfect place for 6 college friends and 5 teens to cook meals, play games and take in sunsets.

Love the School House

This was our third stay at the School House and it was just as great as our first. Such a fun and unique place. Great location, always very clean, and room for everyone to have their own space (we had 8 adults and 9 kids and reserved both units).

Perfect large family spot

We stayed in the upper level of the schoolhouse two years ago so we knew the property would be clean and perfectly-located. The lower unit was great for this trip’s stay as my parents were traveling with us. We had such a great time!

Girls trip

It was an awesome weekend. We Have stayed here three times. Always enough room for everyone. Nice and clean and well stocked. Easy walk to the lake/pier and downtown is a cute little town. Movie theater is a great deal with newer movies as well.

Neat property walking distance to the lake

Really cool renovated school house, tons of room for the whole family and then some. Very clean, functional kitchen with all the cooking utensils we needed. We definitely plan to come back another year!

Family reunion / 4th of July

By far the best rental available in South Haven/South Beach, with the flexibility to easily handle a variety of family sizes and proximity to the beach, downtown, kids park, etc. Great owners that had the home fully stocked and with bonus amenities, easy check in/check out process, and phenomenal communication throughout. Truly the crown jewel of a memorable vacation!!

We love this place

We have stayed here since 2017; initially it was for long weekends in the fall, and then we added a week in the summer (except during the pandemic). The space is beautiful, and offers space for the kids and the adults. We have walkable access to the beaches and downtown. We love this place!

Wonderful stay

This is a unique and impressive property. We stayed in the lower apartment and just marveled at the high ceilings, big windows, and beautiful furnishings. The space was spotless and well equipped with all that we needed. The beds were fresh and very comfortable. The location is also perfect…a few blocks from the beach in one direction and a few blocks to downtown shops and restaurants. We walked everywhere and had a fantastic stay!

A true gem!

This was our second time staying here and we absolutely love staying at the school house! Wonderful location to both shops and beach, as well as a unique property both inside and outside. Clean, well maintained, fully stocked kitchen (cooking utensils/ plates/cups) and tons of space to both congregate and have some time alone.

Perfect Place for Extended Family Trip!

The Schoolhouse is the absolute perfect rental in South Haven for larger groups and children! Walking distance to town, Kids' Corner Park and the beach. We have stayed multiple times in the lower unit and rented both units this trip to accommodate our extended family. The kids enjoyed having multiple spaces to play and escape to across both units. The Schoolhouse is our favorite place to stay in South Haven and we look forward to our trips all year long.

Great Space & Location

The pictures do not do this place justice! It is so cute and spacious. The kitchen had everything we needed and more. It was only about a 10 minute walk into town/beach. Each person in our group talked about returning again with their families! 10/10 recommend.

We enjoyed our stay in the school house. We had 9 adults and there was plenty of room with 4 bedrooms, separate space with fold out couch, and 3 bathrooms. Outside private space with large table, grill and fire pit. Walkable to town and South Beach.

28th Annual Sister Retreat

What a great layout. Many places to be within the walls of the schoolhouse. I felt such joy and calm. Playing pool was very thereapeutic for all of us. We also played cards.Some watched football while others were preparing a meal. All in the same space but with alot of space. Many notes and quotes written on the chalkboards. Totally will return. Thank you schoolhouse for the powerful peaceful calm of your estate.

Always a wonderful stay in the Indiana Schoolhouse!

This is our second stay at the school house and we have always fully enjoyed it! This time we were celebrating a long weekend with our parents and siblings/spouses. There were 8 of us and the space could not have been more perfect. The layout is great to have some space between bedrooms, a big kitchen/living/dining that is perfect for family gatherings, and another living room downstairs. The bedrooms all have themes are are cutely decorated to period/theme. Beds are comfy and everything in the home is clean and well-kept. We were super impressed with how well stocked the kitchen is - and we're foodies! The outdoor area with fire pit was a dream - lots of chairs and seating, as well as a couple grills and very large table & chairs under a pergola with lights - lots of good food and laughs around the fire at night! We also went to Tabor Hill for lunch & wine tasting, rented a boat to take out on the lake, and shopped around SoHa - plenty to do even in early fall season. The owners were wonderful and very communicative. We would highly recommend, and look forward to staying there again!

We love this place!

We have been coming here for a week each summer for several years now (except during COVID), and we have loved it. My family and friends have enjoyed this location and have appreciated that the spaciousness of the location has enabled us to enjoy inviting several friends to join us This has ensured that my grandchildren have had friends to enjoy the experience with. And we have watched them grow up together. You can choose to delete this comment from the review you publish: Unfortunately, this will be our last year. We have loved it, but it has reached the point where I cannot afford it any longer. I am retired with a fixed income, and I have stretched as far as I can. Because my family loves South Haven so much (my granddaughter says she loves it more than DisneyWorld), we will look for a smaller rental and invite friends for one day at a time - fortunately we have friends in Kalamazoo who will be able to manage a day trip rather than overnights. I am not complaining about the cost. I realize costs have gone up dramatically over the last few years. I just want you to know that we have loved it, and appreciated the comfort of the property.

Gathering as clan

I am so thankful that this property was available for a family gathering that has been long overdue. It was the perfect setup for our needs. The main gathering space is very large and multi-functional so no one ever felt left out of the group, even if you were playing pool or cooking. That being said, the layout of the interior is such that if you did wish to remove yourself for a bit, it was easy to do. Some notes: the property is very clean and well maintained. The charm of the schoolhouse is evident, but it is mixed in nicely with modern updates throughout. The kitchen is well stocked. The location is amazing! A nice, short walk to the beach and/or downtown. We met a lot of very nice people in the neighborhood on our walks. It felt very safe. The owners are quite lovely to work with. I was a bit confused on the lockbox situation, but the owners were right there to help out (it was total user error on my part!). One thing to keep in mind, while there is plenty of hand soap, dishwasher pods, even laundry soap, none of the bathrooms had bar soap, shower gel or shampoo. I always travel with my own soap and shampoo, but not everyone might do that. Everything else (towels, tissue, hairdryers, etc.) is plentifully stocked. All-in-all this was such a lovely property to stay at. I am anxious to return. Especially since it rained the entire duration of our stay and we had no opportunity to utilize the wonderful outdoor amenities.
