"The photos are simply untrue. The camp is in poor condition - broken chairs & lanterns; blankets thrown about; garbage strewn here & there. There is only one outlet in each tent and electricity was not always available. We had less than five minutes of hot water over 48 hours. Often one teenager was the only staff on site, and we had to communicate using Google translate, as the adults simply were not around. Hamid did his best to keep things lively, but he’s working with very little. I...

"The hotel manager was very helpful, collected us from Merzouga and drove us back and forth to the MaMa Africa music festival. (We travel by bus not car). The staff were keen to help and i was able to have several large pot of Lipton (black tea) with milk......bliss. The food seemed good although we didn’t have a main meal as we ate mainly in Merzouga. The pool was wonderful and wine was available at a good price."

Riad Les Jardins De Merzouga

8/10 Good

"Some side areas were under construction or repair but all of the main areas were clean, well-maintained and attractively designed. The rooms in particular are quite nice, they're just like the photos. The only thing to complain about is that the wifi is not very good. The owner or manager speaks English and was very helpful in booking a tour for me. Would easily recommend it as a place to stay for enjoying Erg Chebbi."

Morocco Luxury Desert Camp

10/10 Excellent

"Fantastic experience. Clean, comfortable, great staff/service. ATV ride and sunset camel ride were amazing."

Nasser Palace Suites & Spa

10/10 Excellent

"A fantastic hotel in the heart of the desert, with breathtaking views of the Sahara Sand Dunes. Sitting on the hotel porch and taking in the spectacular dunes was an absolute delight and truly one of the highlights of our stay. The hotel staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the chef went above and beyond to prepare both lunch and dinner according to our needs. The food was absolutely delicious and added to an already wonderful experience. The rooms were beautifully designed, tastefully furnished, and surprisingly luxurious. We also loved the hotel’s architecture, which blends beautifully with the surrounding desert landscape and creates a genuine sense of connection with nature. Overall, this was a memorable and unique stay, and we thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our experience."

Berber Palace Hotel

10/10 Excellent

"We had a fabulous time here. The staff, particularly the Manager, went out of their way to meet our needs. They made us feel welcome far beyond check out time, with use of their beautiful pool. Given the heat, this was greatly appreciated. A fabulous chicken tagine was made especially for us. Highly recommended!"

Royal Luxury Camp

10/10 Excellent

"Staff, food, location!"

Hassilabiad Appart Hotel

10/10 Excellent

"One of the best places I stayed in Morocco. The hosts are extremely hospitable and arranged everything very smoothly. The food (especially the breakfast) was just so amazing and all the staff was very kind too. Location is couldn't be better. Highly recommend this place and if you are debating don't think twice. "

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Sijilmasa?

The best area to stay in Sijilmasa is within the historic Kasbah district, particularly around the central market square. This area is the heart of Sijilmasa, offering a genuine feel of the ancient city. You'll find many guesthouses and boutique hotels located within the winding alleyways, often within renovated traditional buildings. The central market square is a lively hub where locals gather, and you can find everything from spices to handcrafted goods. It's an excellent base for exploring the city on foot.Couples looking for a romantic and culturally rich experience will find the Kasbah district particularly appealing. The intimate guesthouses with their courtyards and rooftop terraces provide a tranquil retreat, while the nearby souks offer a chance to discover local crafts and cuisine together. For travellers interested in history and archaeology, staying close to the Kasbah also provides convenient access to the Sijilmasa archaeological site, which is just a short walk away.

When is the best time to go to Sijilmasa?

The best time to visit Sijilmasa is during the cooler months, from October to April, when the desert climate is more forgiving.During these months, daytime temperatures are pleasant, typically ranging from 20°C to 28°C, making it ideal for exploring the historical ruins and surrounding desert landscapes. The evenings are cool, sometimes dropping to single digits, so packing layers is advisable. This period avoids the intense heat of the summer months, which can reach well over 40°C and make outdoor activities uncomfortable. For those interested in stargazing and desert treks, the clear skies during this time offer exceptional visibility. The cooler temperatures make overnight stays in desert camps much more enjoyable, providing a comfortable experience for travellers looking to connect with the desert environment.Travelling between October and April also means you can experience local festivals that often take place during the harvest season, particularly the date harvest in October, which is a significant event in the Drâa Valley.
