Serra San Bruno

Wander through the quaint historic centre and the picturesque forest around this village to see its impressive sanctuary and adventure complex.

Serra San Bruno is an enchanting village that grew around a majestic monastery. It has religious origins, taking its name from an 11th-century saint who died in this region. Walk through the narrow cobbled alleys and admire the array of old buildings in the historic centre.

Learn about the beginnings of the village and its monastery in the Museo della Certosa. The museum is in the midst of a picturesque garden backed by a forest. Find out about the thousands of monks who have sought refuge and spirituality here. The monastery is based in a fairly green part of the mountains, generating a sense of calm and mystery. Attend a spiritual service of religious chanting and watch a film about the monastery.

Go to the village centre for the Santa Maria dei Sette Dolori, a Baroque church with impressive works of art and chandeliers adorning its interior. Several noteworthy religious figures have visited this serene village, including Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI.

Visit the Santuario di Santa Maria nel Bosco in the southern outskirts. Enjoy the serene ambiance and listen to the sound of the birds in the forest surrounding this elegant sanctuary.

For a change of pace, try the thrilling Parco Avventura Adrenalina Verde. This action-packed site has zip lines and playgrounds in the scenic woodland near the town. Bring snacks and refreshments for a picnic in the forest. Expect hot, dry weather in summer, with mild winters.

Note that the abstract 2010 movie Le Quattro Volte, which has almost no dialogue, was shot in these scenic surroundings.

The village is 20 miles (33 kilometres) southwest of the town of Vibo Valentia in southern Italy. It is in the Vibo Valentia province in the region of Calabria. Fly to Lamezia Terme International Airport and drive south for 38 miles (61 kilometres) to reach this destination in little more than 1 hour.

Serra San Bruno is a pilgrim destination in scenic woodland.
