Coming to see the Edmund Pettis Bridge, stay here

The place is beautiful and clean, the bed was beyond comfortable, and the staff could not have been more helpful. If you’re visiting Selma to see the Edmund Pettis Bridge, this is the place to stay

We loved the New Orleans vibe. We had a river view quite peaceful. The outside porches need de webbing sweeping and a good painting otherwise everything was enjoyable.

My wife and I were fortunate to stay the night in a River View room on the final night before closing the doors. The historic feel of St. James Hotel was great, the courtyard was beautiful and the view of the river and Edmund Pettus Bridge were incredible. I wish we could have seen it in it's glory days, as I am sure it was breathtaking.

Very nice accommodations and renovations captured the elegance of the old Selma I remember when growing up. The staff members were professional, friendly & helpful. It has a beautiful courtyard with relaxing music, ideal for sitting outside and eating breakfast or having a glass of wine in the late afternoon (weather permitting). Very convenient location.

Quaint historic hotel

It’s a historic hotel with character. It was reminiscent of New Orleans so it has potential, however it’s Selma. The hotel is lovely and quaint. We felt like we were the only ones there. We certainly were the only ones in the dining room. The bed was fabulous and the room was spacious.

A lovely historic building in a historic location. (Near the Edmund Pettus bridge...scene of a crucial moment in Civil Rights history.) Staff and food were excellent. The property itself looks worn and needs some love (i.e., a paint furnishings freshen up). However, even with these slight issues, I always prefer to stay in a more characterful place like the St James than a generic brand hotel.

This hotel is an anomaly. A really beautiful historic hotel remodeled to keep all the old charm. The courtyard in the center if the hotel is Disney-esqe. There is no laundry (although Expedia said there was) Selma is a deserted city abandoned downtown other than the hotel a few shops, it's sad to see such a city with so much US history be allowed to crumble around itself.

History in the making Every inch bespeaks the life-altering history of this hotel and its nearby environs, including the famed bridge where the march to freedom broke down barriers and continues to beam hope for a future of union an peace among us all. A spectacularly scenic spot on the river that invites charming birds and offers respite from troubles and toils. The corner unit we had with a giant balcony made for a memory-making stay.

The St. James is a lovely historical hotel with a friendly staff. If you stay, reserve a room on the river with a view of the bridge. Be sure to visit the Voting Rights Museum and the park/shop at the base of the bridge. We are so glad we visited the city. We just wish Selma could be revitalized because it deserves that. It’s sad to see that so many beautiful buildings have become run-down.

I love this hotel . The staff is always amazing . The restaurant is delicious. My room had several very dirt spots on the walls and the shower. Tile was missing in the shower and the bottom of the shower was dirty or stained. The hotel was full so there really was no fixing this or changing rooms
