  • Designed by John S. Norris for General Hugh Weedon Mercer, construction of the house began in 1860. Construction was interrupted by the American Civil War, and finally completed around 1868 by the new owner, John Wilder. Before Hansford's death, as retold in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the house had already been the scene of two deaths. In 1913, a previous owner tripped over the second floor banister, fractured his hip, and suffered a concussion, dying three days later. In 1964, a boy chasing pigeons on the roof fell over the edge and impaled himself on the iron fence below.

Perfect location with you’re going with your dogs!

We were one block from Forsyth park so it was lovely for walking the dogs. It is a small space and the stairs are narrow and steep, if stairs aren’t for you. The bathroom door latch needs to be repaired so that the door stays shut. There isn’t parking with the unit so you’ll want to find a place to park and not have to move your vehicleIf you can help it. If you love walkability - this is your town! The place was so clean and had cute little details and everything we needed. There aren’t outlets in the bathroom.

Getaway from our never ending winter.

Historic and comfortable carriage house, nestled amongst some very amazing mansions and just a few steps from Forsyth park. Wife and I fell in love with Savannah and this little place. Everything within walking distance through incredible mossy oak lined parks and streets.
