  • Designed by John S. Norris for General Hugh Weedon Mercer, construction of the house began in 1860. Construction was interrupted by the American Civil War, and finally completed around 1868 by the new owner, John Wilder. Before Hansford's death, as retold in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the house had already been the scene of two deaths. In 1913, a previous owner tripped over the second floor banister, fractured his hip, and suffered a concussion, dying three days later. In 1964, a boy chasing pigeons on the roof fell over the edge and impaled himself on the iron fence below.

Our room was comfortable, the perfect size for our long weekend visiting our daughter in Savannah. Everything was clean and check in went smoothly. Carriage House Stay

My sister and I spent three days at the carriage house and enjoyed ourselves immensely. We were able to get on the hop on/hop off bus and explored the city and we enjoyed the lovely coffee shop just around the corner. The carriage house was a quiet, clean sanctuary. Loved it!

This apartment was the perfect place to stay while in Savannah. It was a close walk to Forsyth Park and the houses surrounding the area were gorgeous. Street parking was super easy. We will definitely stay here again if we’re ever back in Savannah.

Great location

The location of this property made you feel right at home. The small neighborhood bakery/restaurant ( Mate Factor), Kroger’s grocery store & Forsyth Park are within blocks away. It’s a 25 minute walk to historic east River street with many great restaurants overlooking the River. The parking on the street was nice to have. Loved visiting Savannah!!

Vacation in Savannah

The location of this cottage is wonderful! We were able to walk everywhere! There is a coffee shop four houses away that has homemade breads and pastries. Kroger’s is a block away to pick up any supplies. Forsyth Park three blocks away with an amazing restaurant there! We enjoyed the time and will be back.
