Pros: Very close to the beach, beach chairs are a big plus, provisions (toilet paper, detergent, etc.) more generous than other rentals we've experienced, Sanibel is a lovely but expensive place, and this is one of the more affordable rentals.
Cons: Okay I really hate to do this, but I feel like I have to be honest. My husband and I usually rent properties when we travel and I don't think I've ever stayed anywhere that was 'perfect'. Generally there are one or two things that you have to overlook.
I feel bad about saying anything, because this is something that the owners really cannot control, but this unit is described as 'quiet' and we really didn't find it quiet.
I suppose that the measure of quietness is a bit subjective and will vary with the time of year. The fact is that this unit is very close to a pretty busy road. There is an enclosed porch, but the traffic noise is enough that it really isn't somewhere you want to sit. If you do, be prepared to be hear the conversations of other tenants, and the man in the unit on the first floor still smokes despite the rules, so cigarette smoke is still a problem.
We had a single man in his late middle ages staying in the unit above us, and we could hear everything he did, and I do mean everything. Toilet flushes, phone conversations, steps. On Saturday night he had visitors over (no visitor parking here, they parked in one of the resident spots) and conversation could be heard. My husband had the experience of being woken up in the middle of the night by it, and he could clearly hear the lovely phrase "I **** my pants".
The thing is, I don't think this man was particularly noisy. The fact is that this is an older building and noise insulation appears to be non-existent. (we could hear the TV in the unit next door). I suspect that other residents could hear us as well.
Many people won't be bothered by this level of noise, but I feel obligated to warn others.
The other thing I feel obligated to warn others about is red tide. Southwest Florida has done a pretty good job at hiding its red tide problem and if you are like me and from a land-locked northern state you may have never heard about it. In short during red tide outbreaks neurotoxins are released into the air. Both my husband and I were affected and we have no breathing problems. It was the worst on the beach, but present on the entire island to some extent. We heard lots of coughing on the beach.
