This lively beach on Puerto Rico’s Caribbean coastline caters for everyone from honeymooning couples to vacationing families and competing surfers.

Surf, swim and sunbathe at Sandy Beach. Join yoga classes, spot humpback whales and sip tropical cocktails while admiring beautiful sunsets. Sandy Beach is one of the most-loved beaches in Rincón, located on Puerto Rico Island’s westernmost coast. It is also the beach with the largest tourism infrastructure in the region.

The beach features an attractive strip of fine golden sand framed by the bowing branches of tall coconut palms. There’s usually ample space to lay down a towel and enjoy the idyllic Caribbean setting. Relax with a book beneath the shade of one of the swaying trees. Alternatively, take a leisurely stroll along the shoreline. At its easternmost point, Sandy Beach connects with Antonio’s Beach.

Surfing is the main water-based activity here, most notably during the winter months when the waves are biggest. Both beginners and experienced boarders come to ride the waves. Rent equipment and sign up for lessons at schools located at the beach and in Rincón’s town center. If you decide to swim, be cautious of strong currents when the waves are high. The summer months offer calmer swimming conditions.

Visit the bars, cafés and restaurants lining the beach road. Several have direct access to the beach. Tamboo Tavern was included in a recent edition of CNN Travel’s World’s 50 Best Beach Bars. Crowds flock here in the evening to watch the sun go down while enjoying fresh seafood, fruity cocktails and smooth Latin beats. From January to March it becomes a superb viewpoint for watching pods of majestic humpback whales.

If you want to stay overnight, the small beach village has a selection of guesthouses, hotels and self-catering apartments. Toward the eastern end is a yoga school, which offers paid group and private classes with sublime sea views.

Sandy Beach is just a 10-minute drive north of central Rincón. The easiest way to get here is by rented car. Use the parking available where this beach connects with Antonio’s Beach.
