Great attention to detail with every creature comfort. There were even fresh baked cookies upon arrival! An absolutely beautiful remote location! The General Store is an added bonus, with very helpful and friendly staff.
5 stars – A Perfect Stay at The Big HouseWe had a wonderful stay at “The Big House”! The home was even better than the photos—spacious, clean, and very comfortable for our group of six. Communication with the host was excellent, and the check-out instructions were clear and easy to follow. The kitchen had a good selection of cookware, which made meal prep convenient. One of the highlights was the stunning view of the river—we even spotted two river otters playing in the evening! If we’re ever back in the area, we would absolutely stay here again.
This is such a cute house. Very clean and the owners do a lot to make you feel welcome. From cookies to dog treats! My adult family of 8 stayed here with plenty of room and towels! Which always seems to be a problem at other places lol Daughters dog loved the fenced in yard.
Everything was as described. Owner goes above and beyond. The general store cafe is awesome. My husband is still talking about his Smash Burger!! We will be back
We stayed at The Big House for a weekend float on the New River. The house was great and came as advertised. Excellent proximity to the house river. Convenience store right next door was great.

Will definitely be back. The home was absolutely beautiful and sitting at the Gazebo while my kids fished was a great time. The host responded very quickly to any questions I had and the cookies they made for us were great (we ate them all). The kids loved it and my Mother did not want to leave. I definitely recommend staying here.
We had a very enjoyable stay at “the big house”. Communication was excellent. It is truly very spacious and was super clean. The fenced in yard was a plus for the dogs and the deck/landing by the river is lovely with gorgeous views. Natural beauty abounds. I highly recommend this property.
Enjoyed our stay at The Big House and want to return
The house is spacious. Four bedrooms were perfect for our stay. Everything was nice and clean . We enjoyed sitting on the porches and down at the Landing on the river. The colors and weather were perfect. Parking was easy along with check in and check out. The special touches made us feel very welcome. We enjoyed watching all the Trains as well . There was a lot to see and do . Would love to stay again .
We went for bridge day and to see the falls. Lots of room in this house ….great for a large group. Convenient store next door for food items & meals. Be aware a train goes thru several timesduring the day & night
We had a very nice stay. Huge house with four bedrooms. One of them and the lanai have a view of the river. There us also a gazebo next to the river. The place is extremely clean and very well stocked. A little grocery store/gas station close by. Also a Walmart about 20 min away. It was a great base to conduct field trips to see waterfalls, a coal mine exhibit, go for rafting and taking hikes in the beautiful mountain forests.
With 4 queen beds, this was an ideal place for our large family. The closeness of the river access was so nice. We enjoyed the beautiful mountain views making a campfire, the front porch swing, grilling out, going next door to the store for slushies and ice cream, meeting the neighbors who shared their garden veggies with us, and even Fourth of July fireworks on the river! The train was a nice touch, the kids loved being so close and being able to see the coal being hauled and even the Amtrak passenger trains.
Spacious and comfortable home on the New River close to many natural attractions and snow sports. Our dog loved the fenced-in yard.
There is a train that comes through fairly regularly and it is close and loud when it does. Thankfully, it is usually a short train that comes and goes quickly.
Our stay was everything we could have hoped for. The fenced in yard was perfect for our dog. Plenty of space to run around!
The close proximity to the convenience store was perfect for quick snacks or whatever we needed.
The owners of the property are incredibly sweet, and even had freshly baked cookies waiting for us upon arrival. They were very responsive and attentive to detail.
The train was cool to watch pass by. We went to the national park and learned about the history of the area and the importance of the trains for the area, so we appreciated it.
we made sure we visited west virginia during fall colors. The house was clean, actually appliances looked brand new. The host must have read our mind since they provided our favorite coffee, cream and sweetener. These jewels had also baked some wonderful cookies. Just ask my husband he almost ate all. The bathroom upstairs was beautiful, with a huge shower. Sure would reccommend!!!
I am a demanding customer and was pleasantly surprised by the wonderful experience we had at the Big House. This is a 1920s home with character, close to the river, big/loud trains passing regularly, spacious and laid out in a way this good for gathering. We held an adult sibling retreat for 4 here and our experience was outstanding! Owners added special touches to prep the home and accomodate us, which made it extra special. Will come back.
This rental was very nice and well kept. The check in and out process was simple and easy. It is very spacious with plenty of room for several people and has general amenities one is looking for. The only complaint is not with the house but with the location, you are less than 50 feet from train tracks which have trains go by regularly. Other than that the house was great and the location is nice otherwise
We loved the attention to detail from the hosts, from personal messages to cookies and dog treats. They made us feel really welcome.
The house worked out really well--lots of room and great outdoor areas. The only thing we struggled with was the noise of the trains from the railroad tracks that were right next to the house. We got more used to it after the first night, and we did use our earplugs when we slept! So that's one thing to prepare for. We had a great weekend!
We loved this house, located on the river next to the general store. The owners are extremely welcoming. Each of my three kids had their own room, which they were thrilled about. The general store had fantastic breakfasts and desserts. The house is right down the road from one of the national park visitors centers. It is not the main visitors center but had very good interactive exhibits that my teens enjoyed. If you are a light sleeper, I recommend packing ear plugs. I couple times a night a train comes through; however, it was for short durations. It is well worth the brief interruptions for the view on the dock. We spent our evenings reading by the river looking at the mountains. This is a unique and special place.
A few best friends from high school looked for somewhere in the center of where we all live and picked this home for our getaway.
We were a little disappointed with the weather - but absolutely no disappointment with the rental. Walked into a clean and clean smelling house that was more than what was expected. From the cozy living room to the stocked kitchen to the roomy bedrooms, we truly enjoyed our stay.
The wind kept us from sitting outside but loved the swing on the porch and the area down on the river to sit.
There are trains that you contend with, but it really was kind of cool to watch the coal being moved along and counting the length of them. They did not wake me up at all.
Thank you for allowing us to share in your home.
I love taking my kids (5+ fiancé) on adventures and we went to New River National Park to hike & explore. The house was terrific. So welcoming with the jar of homemade cookies! They had coffee, filters, and cream available! The house was very clean and well stocked and the towels were top quality.
All of these things were great, but the best thing about this house was the upstairs bathroom. The renovated bathroom was both large and very accessible for my daughter who has a difficult time getting into regular bath tubs. We had forgotten our bath chair so I improvised by using one of the outdoor chairs in the shower for her to sit on, this worked very well for her.
The only thing that the VRBO description didn’t relay is information about the train and how close the house is to the train track. For someone who has a lot of trouble sleeping this might be a deal breaker for them, but I don’t sleep through the night anyway.
I would totally come back to this lovely home! (It would be nice to have some extra throw blankets)
