Holidays in SJDS

We had an excellent stay! Great spot with lots of room for our family to spread out. The house was very true to the listing, and we had excellent communication with our host and the local property manager. And the caretaker was phenomenal. We would love to return the next time we are in SJDS.

Sad to leave

pictures do not do justice for this casa. We needed a week stay between Xmas/New Years break before we got to our long term rental and lucked out with this place. Originally we we’re excited about our long term rental but now we want to cancel our contract so we can come back to this casa instead. The casa feels like a private oasis and sits on a double Lot. It is very minimalist yet warm and modern with wood and cement finishings and the whole bay side is practically windows. The stairwell is open and suspended to allow for a totally open feeling. The house feels like it’s floating. Upstairs there are 2 (massive) rooms with ensuites that also have tons of ceiling to floor windows and doors (with screens!) facing the water. The upstairs has a full outdoor space that is huge-and great for working out, tanning, drying laundry, (basically a large sunny space) meanwhile the main deck has a pool (that is not a dip pool but actually a fair size!) there is a seperate spare room and ensuite off the garage as well that it’s a nice quiet space if you have someone else staying with you who requires more privacy. We are a family of 3 so we didn’t use it at all. There is a bbq, park in garage, really everything you need but nothing of excess so it’s very easy to keep tidy. The beds were nice big kings. Ac available in all rooms from my recollection however we did not use it much as the big screen doors were amazing to enjoy to breeze and the house sits more in shade. If you want sun you can get it on the big decks. This was a brilliant feature for us because my husband hates being hot and if we want him to hang with us we require some shade. There is a local that cleans the pool and oversees the house. He doesn’t speak much English but it was such a bonus to have him around because he helped us with our Spanish and was just a nice friendly face to have around. To get to the house you walk through where the locals live and can get a feel for their day to day life. We really enjoyed this part, the people are super friendly and we felt very safe. This area is very vibrant and does come with significant noise with roosters dogs birds and monkeys. If you come during a holiday be prepared for fireworks and loud music that travels across the bay. If you don’t like that I recommend being tucked far away From the main strip during these times. Love this house!

Amazing house in San Juan del Sur

This is a beautiful home overlooking San Juan del Sur that was perfect for our group of 6. It's within about 15 minutes walk to downtown bars and restaurants. January was an amazing host and gave us great recommendations for activities, a restaurant to spend NYE and other attractions to checkout while we spent our time here. There's a slight trek to the house once you get out of town and start walking uphill, but that was part of the fun and made the house more rewarding once we got there!

When can we return?!

Our group of three couples had a fantastic week away in San Juan del Sur. We found the listing description to be accurate, the home to be clean & well maintained, and just a 5-7min walk to town. Our three couples never felt cramped in the home and moved freely between floors. We needed a day to adjust to the roosters and dogs but they quickly faded to the background. Quiet time on the upstairs deck or social time on the lower deck/pool perfectly adjacent to the living room & kitchen. Morning, day, and evening activities often brought us by the home allowing for a quick dip in the pool and a few minutes in the sun before on to the next activity! While the listing is accurate that you don't need a car, your trips to the remote surf beaches may be by locals truck/shuttle. If your group is big enough and enough surfing is on your agenda, an SUV (we had a Toyota Fortuner) may be helpful so our group of 6 could be on our schedule. Home was base for each day's explorations including the ferry to Ometeppe Isand's Ojo de Agua (spring fed pool), to our guided tour from Nicaraga Tour Network(.com) to mix it up. These activities broke up a long string of beautiful beaches, relaxing hammock time, and excellent surfing. Our two surfers took full advantage of the more advanced surfing (Playa Maderas seemed to be the favorite) while those of us who couldn't handle the bigger swells by week's end enjoyed some much needed down time. Playa El Coco was empty and potentially the most beautiful. While I had heard that the local town was filled with very nice people and a relaxing feel, my experience exceeded expectations. Within the first few days, we felt genuinely accepted by the community and truly welcomed everywhere we went, even by the locals out on the big waves too! The relaxed nature of the community became contagious and therefore a big part of the trip for us. Obviously the perpetual sun, amazing beaches, fun surf, great little town, and beautiful home are all reasons to return but the sense of the relaxed community was awesome! Another unforeseen highlight were the great conversations we had with Ronald when he came by daily for pool cleaning. A very helpful guy with a great personality--surprise highlight for the trip! We practiced our Spanish while he practiced his English. He was even willing to accompany us to the "better" fish market to assist in getting a great price on filleting a Dorado and fresh shrimp to grill back at the house!

Exceeded expectations on all levels!

Have to admit, Nicaragua wasn't on our bucket list but through chance, we found ourselves fortunate enough to get to visit San Juan del Sur and stay in this beautiful home! The town is filled with friendly faces and such nice people, it took us only 1-2 days to really settle in to this relaxed lifestyle but quickly came to love it! For those that question safety as they contemplate a trip to Nica or SJdS, our group quickly found that any uneasiness we had was in our heads and that uneasiness completely evaporated by the end of the first day (Nov2017). The beaches, town, sun, surf, and sense of community quickly accepts you. By day three, I was thinking that any future trips to Mexico are in jeopardy now as i'd much rather return to SJdSur! For our group of 3 couples, the house had plenty of room to relax and move around. Having the main living area and kitchen right next to the outdoor pool made for a great shared space moving freely between the spaces. In early evenings, it was common to enjoy a quick dip in the pool accompanied by a drink before working up a tasty group meal or walking in to town to any one of the many yummy restaurants. Some days some of us might walk in to the town for a relaxing breakfast while others were on their way back from dawn patrol surfing at any one of the great beaches. The favorite surf beach was Maderas while the favorite scenic beach was El Coco. Our group's real surfers (not me) would have surfed every day if other fun activities weren't on the list! The property was clean, well maintained, and the descriptions on VRBO are accurate. I have already recommended this property to one friend and one of the couples on the trip is considering returning to San Juan del Sur in January for more surfing, sun, and probably a Michelada or two. One of the unforeseen highlights to the trip for all six of us, not just our group's better Spanish speakers, was our daily conversations with Ronald! (he cares for the home & pool daily). He was practicing his English and we were practicing our Spanish. We had some great chats with him and even talked him in to taking us to the better fish market to negotiate a dorado and fresh shrimp to BBQ on the grill next to the pool! Ronald had a great impact on our trip and helped us connect with the community much more quickly. If you do get a rental car to drive yourself to surf beaches, get an SUV. Is it too soon to go back?
