Fine Old World hotel
The hotel is fine, our room was on a second floor walk up, there's a Japanese restaurant in the hotel. Our room overlooked the park, which was nice, but there was a fair bit of Street noise.

When we arrived at the hotel from the airport it was apparently closed. We could not get in and they would not answer the phone. Our taxi driver had to call around to different hotels to get up into one last minute.

staff was very nice and helpfull, though not very fluent in English. It would've been nice to have a longer string to control the lights and fan. now you have to stand on the bed to pull it. Also it would've been nice to have a trash can in lobby and outside (for smokers).

Location close to downtown and next to great park!
Had a very nice stay here, enjoyed the room and views to the huge park in front were excellent. The owner and staff were all very friendly and made me feel so welcome during my visit. Huge La Sabana park across the street is great for wandering around and people watching!

Great location, friendly staff!
Great location next to La Sabana park, close to downtown and easy access to the highway out to the Pacific Coast. Friendly staff. View to the park was great! Would definitely go back!

Really great place to stay
Probably the best hostel I have stayed in anywhere. The rooms are of a good size and very comfortable. The staff & owners are very helpful & friendly. The quality of the food in the restaurant is excellent, although the portions are huge and a bit difficult for one person to manage. Apart from that no complaints. Would stay here again.

Great little room but avoid the restaurant
Nice room, everything was clean and beautiful view of the city park. The only thing we were not pleased with was the quality of the Korean food at the hotel's restaurant. Way overpriced and definitely not what we expected for Korean food. We paid $16 for a watered down black bean noodles with Latin American noodles instead of Asian ones. Tasted like Mexican noodle soup, not Korean. But the the actual accommodations were fine!

OK for 1 night
The hotel is in good condition and the staff is friendly. The restaurant is OK but it is definitely not the best one we tried in Costa Rica. The area around the hotel seems a bit sketchy but I think it reflects the general impression we had in San Jose. We just stayed there 1 night in order to catch our flight the next morning at San Jose Int. airport (20-30min away from the hotel).

Charming hotel near La Sabana Park
We chose Hostel Columbus based on location, affordability, and prior reviews, and the hotel accommodations didn't disappoint. As others have mentioned, it really is more of a hotel than a hostel. Our room was nice and had a view of La Sabana Park. If you're a light sleeper as I am, you may prefer a quieter room in the back. There was no noise from other rooms or the common area, but there was traffic all night long. The internet was spotty in our room, but I got consistent internet in the common area which also has a refrigerator. The one thing that keeps me from giving 5 stars for room comfort is that our room was cold, and a quilt or thicker blanket would have afforded a better night's sleep. We were excited that there is an Asian restaurant in the hotel, and I think I had read that it was expensive, but very good food. While we were happy that we didn't have to go out in search of food, we were a little disappointed in the quality of the food. I splurged and ordered teriyaki salmon, but it was overcooked and tough, and my husband was disappointed in his noodle dish.

Our interest is not to have 5 stars :(, Our goal is to give the best service, good breakfast, good internet to all our guests in a budget hotel. If we have some noise because we are in the main street and park front the savanna (people who live in rural areas where there are no steps, we do not recommend our hostel) but it is not a noise that does not let sleep. About our internet. We have wifi (router) each floor to have the best signal and speed 2mb per second. To all our guests we recommend changing the Wi-Fi machine every time you change your floor (if you are connected to the third floor router and you are on the first floor .. you will not get the best internet: (..... Each room has 2 extra blankets .. if you want more extra blankets, nothing tells our staff :) and will be resolved. For one it may be that it is very cooked and for others it is not. To all our clients we recommend that you indicate your tastes in order to serve the restaurant's service and food.

Perfect little place with great location and food.
Great people, food, location and service. Loved that it was a unique property, part of the community and close to what we needed on this trip. So much cooler than staying a generic hotel and more than fairly priced (note- no AC but we don't want it). Only two complaints- the pillows and no overhead light. The bed was great but both my wife and I were unable to find comfort with the pillows. Also the overhead light was not working and the bedside lamp not enough. Two easy things to remedy.

A true gem.
Es el mejor hotel en el que me he quedado en mucho tiempo. Los dueños y el personal son muy amables y el lugar cumple de más con lo esperado, tiene encanto propio y es en verdad una joya. Muy recomendable, excelente calidad, limpieza, precio, trato. Espero volver a hospedarme en este hotel.

El hotel es agradable y está ubicado en una área adecuada en la ciudad, por el precio de las habitaciones no se puede pedir más, ya que es un hotel económico, si no tienes pensado gastar mucho y estar cómodo, hotel agradable
