Formerly a palace of King Henry IV, this elegant monastery’s centuries-old Gothic and Mudéjar architecture now decorates a hotel and restaurant.

Discover the preserved artworks and architectural flourishes of the San Antonio El Real Convent, a hidden treasure on the outskirts of Segovia’s historic district. Experience the simplicity and grandeur of the preserved complex, which features an Isabelline-Gothic façade, 15th-century Mudéjar elements and rich Baroque decorations. Learn about the monastery’s former use as a leisure palace and follow its path through history as it is transformed into a convent and finally a hotel and restaurant.

Note the subdued simplicity of the building’s Gothic façade, which dates back to 1455. Enter the church, which features ornate 18th-century Baroque artwork adorning 15th-century foundations. The striking Mudéjar coffering in the ceiling was left in tact as the centuries went by and today is one of the city’s best examples of Mudéjar handwork. Carved from timber sourced from the pine forests of Valsaín, the coffering is in the style of the Spanish monarchies in the House of Trastámara.

Check out the detailed friezes, which are decorated in the Gothic style and feature imagery from King Henry IV’s reign. The king founded the Franciscan convent and later handed the institution to his sister, Queen Isabella I, who transformed it into a nuns’ convent. See the church’s Flemish altarpiece, which is believed to date back to 1460. The sacristy is adorned with restored ceiling decorations that depict colorful motifs, King Henry’s shield and the Franciscan Cord.

The beautiful convent is now home to a restaurant, where you can taste traditional Mediterranean fare in a historic setting. Reserve a room in the converted hotel upstairs and stay overnight in the beautifully rustic convent. Enjoy your breakfast in the sunny courtyard flanked by ancient stone cloisters.

The San Antonio El Real Convent is located next to Segovia’s Aqueduct in the southeastern quarter of the city’s historic district. It is within walking distance of Segovia Cathedral and the Alcázar of Segovia. The convent’s beautiful church and sacristy can be accessed for a small fee. Children enter for free. The convent is closed on Mondays, but the restaurant and hotel are still accessible.
