Visit quaint shops lined up along the riverside and take kids to see some of the 4,000 animals in the conservational zoo.
Saint-Aignan is a village of charming houses along the Cher River. Typical of the Loir-et-Cher region, it has its own medieval castle. The commune also features picturesque nature trails and a zoo. Embark on family walks in the woods and along the riverbanks, before exploring the historic sites of the town centre.
Visit the Zoo Parc Beauval, which has a focus on the conservation of its animals. Stroll through the park to encounter numerous endangered species that are bred here before being sent to other zoos. These include jaguars, snow leopards and gorillas. Top favourites include the two giant pandas. Watch the Californian sea lion show and see some of the park’s 2,000 birds in the Masters of the Air show.
From the zoo, make your way northeast along the river for 2 miles (3 kilometres) to reach the historic centre. As in many other Loir-et-Cher locations, this village has a castle. Gaze up at the inspiring structure looming over the city.
While in the historic centre, meander along enchanting cobblestone alleys to small boutiques and restaurants. The village is known for its Valençay goat’s cheese, green berry lentils and pastries full of mashed potato. Have a springtime meal of fresh strawberries and sautéed asparagus and local wines. The city of Blois is a 25-mile (40-kilometre) journey north from the village. Nearby communes include Montrichard, Cheverny and Chaumont-sur-Loire. Rent a car for your Loir-et-Cher holiday to travel between the quaint villages.
