Charming cozy RIVERFRONT cottage on the Piney River. A little slice of heaven!

The Chestnut House

The perfect place for you and your family to rest, unplug, enjoy novice trout fishing, and stargaze under the clean country sky.

Welcome to the Chestnut House. This recently renovated riverfront home is a blend of historic charm and modern elegance. Originally built in 1926 as a log cabin made of real chestnut, it has since been used as a US Post office, country market, and later a house in 1936. The home is nestled between the Cardinal and Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Range and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest.

The main attraction of the Chestnut House is the outdoors. Just a step away from the back door is the Piney River. Enjoy the sounds of this rushing river from the beautiful sundeck furnished with Adirondak chairs, or the picnic tables, rock fire-pit, or hammock. This two-story cottage offers scenic river and mountain views, a wood stove, chef’s kitchen, and sleeping accommodations for up to six guests. Open the windows and enjoy the sounds of the rushing Piney River and nature throughout the house.

A fun fact about the home: Growing on the side of the home facing the river is a very old, almost extinct, American Chestnut Tree. This is why we call it the “Chestnut House”.

Lastly, don’t forget your fishing rods! Native brook trout and wild brown trout populate the river.

Perfect place for a nice getaway. Our host Maria was one of those rare people even if you didn’t meet her in person, you know she is great! Always answered our questions promptly. Place was clean, filled with everything you can possibly need and more. We celebrated my wife’s birthday there. And her luck would have it we had 5 inches of snow. So it was simply magical. We will definitely go back in a different season to enjoy the outdoors.Thank you Maria!

The Piney River house far exceeded our expectations and was perfect in every way. The home itself is cozy, beautifully decorated and very functional. The property is amazing with a gentle slope to the river and a large yard for games. We had a wonderful time and hope to return soon. 10/10; highly recommend!

This week, we had the pleasure of staying at Chestnut House, a charming property built in the 1920s, probably by my own great-grandparents. The experience was both relaxing and inspiring, offering a unique blend of historic ambiance and modern comfort. From the moment we arrived, the character of Chestnut House was immediately apparent. The architecture and original features, such as the exposed original log walls in the kitchen, wide moldings, and metal roof, transported us to another era while still feeling inviting and cozy. The house’s classic design created a warm, nostalgic atmosphere that made our stay truly special. The rooms were spacious and thoughtfully decorated, blending period details with comfortable furnishings. Large windows filled each space with natural light. We appreciated the modern updates in the kitchen and bathrooms, which made our stay convenient without detracting from the home's original character. Nestled in a quiet neighborhood, Chestnut House offered a peaceful retreat from the bustle of daily life. There are chairs, a hammock, and a fire circle near the Piney River, creating a sense of communion with nature. The combination of the home's history and the welcoming environment made it easy to unwind and create lasting memories. The house was extremely clean and included everything you need for a great stay. The hosts have outdone themselves!

Honestly, anything negative swims in a sea of greatness at this house. Could use more plates as well as silverware - 2 of us went through everything in a day and a half...bagel on a dinner plate , it is. lol.We have stayed at a lot of VRBO properties; this definitely earned a 10 as well as the very solicitous and attentive host.

This home is absolutely stunning. We felt as though we stepped in a modern design magazine shoot. The marriage of color, texture, and style perfectly complements the natural surroundings while maintaining a chic, contemporary vibe. The property is breathtaking, with a firepit, sprawling lawn, flowing creek, and fruit and nut trees. We loved being close to hiking in the George Washington and Thomas Jefferson National Forests, plus nearby wineries and breweries. In the evenings we enjoyed board games, cornhole, darts, and grilling under the stars—and best of all, we could bring our two dogs. Maria and Randy’s hospitality was unmatched. We didn’t want to leave this wonderland!

Amazing house that my wife and I, our kids, and my parents all loved. Extremely clean and well stocked. Enjoyed coffee on the porch in the rockers in the morning and relaxing on the deck by the river in the evening. Kids and I loved wading around in the river. All in all, highly recommend.

Let me start by saying Maria & Randy are easy to communicate with and will go above to make your stay amazing. The house & grounds are absolutely beautiful! My husband, my self, our pup & out foster pup had a wonderful time doing nothing for our 20th anniversary. We walked the grounds, sat by the creek, walked to the national forest, read a book or 2 & our pup LOVED the water. We loved when it rained with the tin roof, it just sounded peaceful. Everything you need is there & waiting for you! The only thing I wish we knew beforehand is that dogs are not allowed on the furniture(which is completely fine) but if you are like us & let your pups on the couches you will spend a lot of time yelling to stay off furniture. But other than that, it is totally worth it just for the quietness alone. Will definitely recommend to family & friends.

Paradise on the river

Gorgeous, peaceful setting in the middle of nowhere, which is exactly what we were looking for. We wanted to get away from it all, and Maria and Randy provided that opportunity. The house has been renovated beautifully, and someone has some great taste! I love all the green tones, wood, brick, and...oh, the velvet!Although the house is wonderful, including a full-stocked, high-end kitchen, I admit that I most sitting by the river and playing Frisbee with my family, as well as my solo strolls through the yard. (I didn't get one mosquito bite!)Oh, I need to mention that the beds are very comfy. My husband and I have backs that are very picky about mattresses and they were perfect!Bring some food staples with you (or go by the store on the way in) because this little house really is in the middle of nowhere...right at the foot of the George Washington National Forest. So restaurants and grocery stores are quite a hike, but when we ventured out to dinner, we were VERY HAPPY to spend some time at Bold Rock Nellysford Cidery! The cider, of course, is great (even the non-alcoholic apple cider), but the food is pretty darn awesome, too! They even prepared a beef patty for our dog (he gives it 5 stars!).We did spend one day exploring Wintergreen and another in Charlottesville, where we had a great lunch at Michie Tavern.I highly recommend staying at this amazing VRBO. We went during the summer, but I imagine it would be absolutely wonderful in the fall, too!

This is our second time staying at the property and it only got better. The hosts do a wonderful job of keeping this property looking good and their attention to detail is great. We also enjoyed the freebies like the complimentary local tomatoes and eggs OR the apple cider donuts. I highly recommend this property.

The Chestnut House is Immaculate!

This was by far the most clean, organized, and welcoming VRBO we have stayed in. Because of its distance to a town, Maria let us know ahead of time so we could plan accordingly. She went out of her way to make sure we had access to the home that best fit our schedule. The house is beautifully decorated, has quality linens, nicely done appliances, and small comforts of home. Seating is everywhere:)

We had an amazing weekend stay at this property. Pictures cannot do it justice. The home is beautiful and elegantly updated, the backyard and river is gorgeous, and the hike near the house is like an enchanted forest - we encountered so many beautiful butterflies! We always love coming here. Maria and Randy are top notch hosts and always go above and beyond to make the stay great. We had everything we needed and had a great time relaxing by the river, sitting by the camp fire, relaxing inside with a great view, and just enjoying everything the Piney River has to offer. We absolutely loved our stay at this cozy cottage in the Virginia hills! It had everything we needed, and we were able to cook meals easily since everything worked perfectly. The owners were fantastic and even helped us celebrate our 6-year-old's birthday with a special treat. Just a small note for future guests: if you go for a walk and take a right out of the cottage, then another immediate right over the little bridge, you'll come across a house about a quarter mile down with some aggressive dogs. Just be cautious in that area or if you have small childrenor pets avoid it completely. Overall, we had a fantastic time and can't wait to return!

Outdoors forest trout river. Indoors comfortable elegance.

We were amazed with the extensive property and beautifully outfitted home. All areas were spotless including a shed and an outdoor barn space shockingly clean, all lawn was recently cut so we could make use of all the spaces in so many ways. Even the windows were like new and we could open windows and it was spotless not a bug in the screens. Can't express how clean the inside was, with lots of decor, games, books. I cooked a lot and the kitchen had every option you might need. Appliances seemed brand new. Huge dining room table. We also cooked over the fire pit using a tripod we brought and charcoal they had for the grill, and ate by the river, where we spent most of our time. With our dog we walked a couple miles on the gravel road into the national forest along the river and found much to explore there and blooming mountain laurel and rhododendron. We used this as a retreat while a family member is going through chemo for incurable cancer, and chose it due to it is closer than our home to UVA med in case of issues, it had the highest cleanliness rating, and we could feel like we were camping with our dog yet have a luxury lodging. We got that and more and can't wait to book another trip here. The communications were excellent. The chestnut tree is a treasure, the only place you'll ever see a mature American chestnut tree when it used to be one of the most common trees in the Appalachians. How it still lives when blight has made this tree extinct is a mystery.
