Enjoy pristine beaches, glistening marina views and an active nightlife at Punta del Este. After humble beginnings as a fishing port, this coastal town has evolved into an exclusive resort popular with Argentine and Brazilian vacationers.
Punta del Este is located on the peninsula between the Rio de la Plata (River Plate) and the Atlantic Ocean. Walk Avenida Gorlero and buy handmade goods at the market. Up-market boutiques can be found on Calle 20. Get a feel for the city from the lighthouse lookout, which offers spectacular views of the coast.
Pretty beaches line both sides of the peninsula. Walk over sand dunes to Playa Brava and watch surfers chasing the perfect wave. Stop by La Mano, a statue of a giant hand emerging from the sand.
Playa Mansa provides access to the still waters of the Rio de la Plata. Try windsurfing or waterskiing. Alternatively, watch the water sports from a beachside restaurant. Kids will love the waterslides at Splash Aqua Park.
In the afternoon, walk the waterfront promenade and admire the sun glinting off luxury yachts in the marina. Hire a boat trip to Isla Gorriti to find a number of virtually empty beaches. Alternatively, spot sea lions as you cruise around Isla de Lobos.
Return to port at sunset and watch the sky's palette transform from an outdoor terrace. Bars host music and partygoers until the early morning.
Rent a car and take a daytrip to Casapueblo, a gorgeous hotel and museum designed by Uruguayan artist Carlos Paez Vilaro. Stop by the Arboretum Lussich and then drive east to La Barra. This town's trendy beaches, stylish nightclubs and exclusive restaurants often host celebrities.
During Punta del Este's high season, from Christmas through January, expect notably higher prices. It is recommended to book accommodation months in advance. Fans of a quieter ambiance may prefer visiting from July through October, when migrating whales can be seen from the shore.
