Like staying with relatives you haven't met. The host couple were incredibly warm and welcoming. The property is very small and quiet. The room was clean and comfortable. And the location was convenient. The breakfast was basic, but good. And the host served everything and it was all nicely presented. Seriously it was like stay with an uncle and Aunt you haven't met.
Manuel is an engaging and very pleasant host. He and his wife go out of their way to provide comfort and local information. The house and the rooms have a very personal touch. You feel as if you were in a family members home.
If you book on Hotels.com or Expedia, it provides a $US dollar quote and information telling you of the exemption of paying the 19% tourist tax if you pay in dollars or with a dollar based card.
I tried to pay in US dollars as per the law but Manuel insisted on the 19% added to the quoted Hotels.com rate.
I reluctantly paid and then explained to him my disappointment and how I thought it was unprofessional.
He explained to me that he has applied with the government but the paperwork is slow to process.
He is proud that this has been a business for 40 years. I have stayed in brand new Chilean properties that have complied with the law and were able to process paperwork so as not to charge the 19% tax.
It' s not alot of money and maybe he needs it more than the guests but be prepared to pay and if you decide to stay in this cozy, clean , centrally located hostel, don't let the tax ruin your visit
The manager will try to charge 19% even if you have a immigration paper. Hotels.com offered a nightly rate that was cheaper than what we paid and they still wouldn't honor it even though we legally could. The manager charges whatever that want when you show up and said that our price was no longer valid because we booked 2 months prior to arrival!!!! DONT EXPECT TO PAY PRICE YOU SEE ON HOTELS.COM!!!!!! TOTAL SCAM!!!
We had to find different accommodations and paid twice the price as we were finding a place on the same night. Booked through hotels.com which stated clearly that all fees and taxes were included in the rate but again manager said it did not matter. Better just to find a different place to stay where you know what you will pay when you arrive.
The couple who run this place are so friendly and helpful. We had difficulty with Spanish and booking tours, Manuel did the phone calls for us. They also left breakfast out early for us so we could eat for our early tours :)
The place and people who run it are great! The place was more like a bed and breakfast than a typical hostel. It is cozy and feels like home. The couple that run it go above and beyond to make you comfortable and taken care of. Breakfast was nice. Highly recommended!
Super nice owner, very helpful and interesting and engaged man who speaks excellent English. This was a good stop for actiuring cyclist. My room, two twins, was clean and very comfortable but quite dark. The front room with a queen bed was airy and light. Basic breakfast. An interrsting drawing room to enjot coffee and tea. Quiet and a bit out from the center but good, basic accomodation. I’d stay again but get the room with the big bed.
Note: while you can pay by credit card, this hotel does not know how to not charge the Chilean 21% room tax. No big deal and as I rode a few thousand kilometers on Chilean roads I wasn’t greatly troubled by this.
