Province of Agrigento

Thousands of years ago people first came to settle on these shores, and now a busy modern city keeps watch over the wonders of ancient empires.

Perched on a hill that overlooks southern Sicily’s astonishing Greek ruins you’ll find the intriguing city of Agrigento. Walk the same streets as ancient seafaring peoples did as you discover the city’s cultural, historic and culinary offerings.

More travellers visit the UNESCO-listed Valley of the Temples than any other historical site in Sicily and it is one of the most impressive examples of Greek ruins outside of Greece itself. Just 3 kilometres (1.9 miles) away from downtown you can explore a 1,900-hectare (4,695-acre) area of ruins that includes ancient streets, buildings and temples.

Peoples converged at this spot in the 6th century B.C. to build the ancient city of Akragas. Marvel at the valley’s highlight, the Tempio della Concordia, which has stood remarkably intact for nearly 2,500 years. Spend a day absorbing the stories and history of the site. Many chose to split their exploration into 2 days, seeing the eastern zone on one day and the western zone on the next.

To continue learning, visit the comprehensive Museo Archeologico, just north of the temples. See salvaged and restored artefacts from the ancient site that will give you a clearer picture of life in ancient times.

Back in town, visit the striking 11th-century cathedral on Via Duomo and the Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Greci. In the medieval town centre wander the length of the Via Atenea to find unique gifts and taste delicious regional delicacies and wine.

Visit the historic Monastero Fortezza di Santo Spirito to buy fresh traditional sweets from the nuns who spend their days baking. The custom has taken place in the city for centuries and is a popular destination for hungry pilgrims and travellers. Take a break in the serene Giardino della Kolymbetra, full of rich plant life particular to the region.

The city of Agrigento is located on a plateau overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and many hotels offer sea views. Agrigento is the major city of the Sicilian province of the same name. Reach the city by intercity bus, train services from Palermo and Catania or by car. Flights arrive from around Europe to Palermo and Catania daily.
