Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Povydří?
The best area to stay in Povydří is the main village of Modrava, or the neighbouring hamlets of Filipova Huť and Kvilda, for direct access to the Šumava National Park.

Modrava is the heart of the Povydří region, known for its traditional Šumava architecture and its location directly on the Vydra River. It's a small, pleasant village with several guesthouses and restaurants. The main visitor centre for the national park is located here, providing information on local trails and wildlife. This area is particularly well-suited for nature enthusiasts and those looking for a quiet retreat.

For those prioritising outdoor activities, staying in Filipova Huť or Kvilda offers excellent access to hiking and cycling trails. Filipova Huť is the highest-lying settlement in the Czech Republic and provides stunning views of the surrounding hills. Kvilda is a slightly larger village with more amenities, including cross-country ski rentals in winter. Both are ideal for active couples or solo travellers who want to spend their days exploring the national park.
When is the best time to go to Povydří?
The best time to go to Povydří is during late spring (May to June) or early autumn (September to October).

During these months, the weather is generally pleasant, with mild temperatures that are ideal for outdoor activities like hiking and cycling. The landscape is particularly scenic, with wildflowers blooming in spring and the foliage changing colour in autumn, offering excellent opportunities for photography. You'll also find that these periods avoid the peak summer crowds, making for a more relaxed experience.

Families travelling with children will appreciate the comfortable weather for exploring the area's nature trails and visiting local attractions without the intensity of summer heat or the chill of winter. Many of the outdoor activities, such as exploring the Vydra River valley or visiting the Poledník observation tower, are best enjoyed when the conditions are moderate.

Couples looking for a peaceful escape will find the shoulder seasons great for romantic walks through the Šumava National Park.
