Porthmadog is a busy harbour town rich in maritime history and situated on the Glaslyn Estuary. Home to the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Steam Railway, a must visit for families and rail enthusiasts alike. The West Highland railway starts from beneath the castle walls at Caenarfon and is the UK’s longest heritage railway running 25 miles. Enjoy picturesque views while being hauled by the world’s most powerful narrow gauge steam locomotives. Porthmadog is also home to the best-loved landmark, The Cob; a mile-long embankment across the estuary.

You are within easy reach of Black Rock Sands where you’ll find miles of sweeping sands and dunes along with rich marine life throughout the low-tide caves and rock pools to the west. Also, Portmeirion, an enchanting Italian-style village boasting architectural heritage, stunning setting and sub-tropical gardens. The site was acquired by Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis who wanted to show how a naturally beautiful location could be developed to enhance the natural surroundings rather than spoil them and is certainly a sight to see.

A short drive down the coast is Harlech with its imposing UNESCO World Heritage castle and extensive beach. A short drive inland is Blaenau Ffestiniog, an adrenaline junkie’s delight with Zip World, the largest zip wire zone in the world, Bounce Below, where you can bounce on trampoline nets deep underground in an old slate cavern, and the Stiniog downhill mountain bike trails. The area has something for everyone of all ages, from scenic coastal walking routes developed by Gwynedd Council, bike trails, to a whole host of water sports on offer at places such as Surf Snowdonia and the National White-Water Centre. It really is a diverse area to explore.
