The best area to stay in Ponnirai is typically around the main temple complex and the adjacent residential areas, as this is where you'll find the most convenient access to amenities and local life.

This central area is Ponnirai's heart, with the renowned Ponnirai Amman Temple as its focal point. The streets immediately surrounding the temple are bustling with small shops selling religious items, flowers, and local snacks. You'll find a mix of traditional guesthouses and a few modern accommodations here. Its compact layout makes it easy to explore on foot.

For couples seeking a culturally rich experience, staying near the temple is ideal. You'll be within walking distance of daily temple rituals, local markets, and traditional eateries, allowing for an authentic immersion into the town's spiritual and community life. The evenings here are particularly engaging, with prayers and cultural activities often taking place.

Travellers looking for a more relaxed but still central stay might prefer accommodations slightly set back from the immediate temple area, perhaps a few streets away. These spots often offer a quieter environment while still being a short walk from all the main attractions.

The best time to go to Ponnirai is during the cooler, drier months, typically from October to March.

During these months, the weather is most pleasant, with more moderate temperatures and significantly less humidity compared to the monsoon season. This makes exploring the local temples and natural surroundings much more comfortable.

For families, visiting between October and March is ideal as outdoor activities, such as visiting the nearby wildlife sanctuaries or enjoying the beaches, can be done without the intense heat or heavy rainfall. The generally clear skies also make for better photography opportunities.

Couples looking for a relaxing escape will also appreciate this period. The evenings are cooler, great for leisurely strolls or dining al fresco.
