A Little Bit of History This one-room schoolhouse educated local children from 1891 to 1966. Over time, it became a cherished community gathering place before being restored into a private home in 2016. A full renovation in 2023 transformed it into the modern retreat it is today—where history, comfort, and nature meet in a quiet, meaningful way. ________________________________________

We loved the schoolhouse! It was decorated so adorable. It had everything we needed. The kitchen was fully stocked. The grounds were beautiful! The hot tub was a bonus for our cool nights! They even supplied towels for the hot tub. We will be back to enjoy this charming old school house!
We were so blown away by the cleanliness, charm, and decor and design of the whole place. It was so beautiful and a wonderful experience spending each night by the fire pit and in the hot tub. The area was secluded enough to feel truly in the country, while it was less than an hour from the city. The owners were very nice and helpful, and quick to respond. We loved our whole experience and will definitely be back!
You just don't expect something this beautiful in a small town in Kansas. It's an ordinary old school house until you walk in. Granite counter tops, modern kitchen, cozy bedrooms. Beautiful well appointed bathrooms. It feels as if these owners really care about you. It's almost like you're staying at your bohemian grandma's house. She has banaids, and toothbrushes, body soap and shampoo, spices and coffee, soft sheets and comforters and "forts"for those who can go to the loft. There are two lofts, beautiful stairs! It looks as if the stairs are built from the desks of this old school house, but I did not confirm that with the owner. I didn't go up... I am afraid of heights, but my grandsons loved them. The coffee bar has regular and decaf coffee for you to use, and some tea. Beautiful mugs and creamers. Order your groceries ahead of time from Walmart and pick them up on your way to the school house. It's clean, neat, beautiful, completely supplied and very comfortable. The host is extremely responsive. There are wineries in the area to visit, we did not. As remote as this place is, there are still things to visit in the area. Just enjoy this place. it's awesome.
My wife and I greatly enjoyed our stay here. Lara did a fantastic job hosting, supplying snacks and everything that we needed. Would highly recommend staying here!
My family and I enjoyed your home. I must say our host Rosely was very quick with responding to any questions or concerns that i had. The peoperty was very clean and well equipped with items that was useful. I will definitely recommend family and friends to stay at your home. Thank you for having us.
Our group really enjoyed our stay at the Vickers Schoolhouse. The property is cute, clean, and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay! I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a cute little spot away from the city.
Such a cool, unique and comfortable home. It was spotless when we checked in and had everything we needed. Lara was an excellent host. I can't wait to stay again on our next trip to Paola.
Just what we were looking for, a place to disconnect. Very comfortable space inside and out. Would definitely stay again.
Thank you for sharing your property...
Perfect get a way for any occasion. The level of detail and design is very much appreciated. Just about anyone can rehab a home for vacation rental purposes, but converting a one room school house into a homey retreat is quite the feat. Stay here, you will love it!
We booked this house for a bridal party and then the bride and groom stayed at the house after the wedding. It was perfect. Just a comfy and cozy place. Such an amazing view overlooking the pond and the hot tubs was just an amazing touch! Even for the cool night it was!
We had a great visit with family while staying at this perfect VRBO! This place was very clean (cleanest VRBO we have ever stayed at), the internet was great, the AC worked awesome, and it was nicely decorated inside and out. Lara is VERY responsive and nice! The location is 5 minutes from town, which was nice because there wasn't a lot of traffic noise, but close enough should we run into 'town' for a forgotten item. I would recommend this VRBO to anyone, and we will be staying here again when we visit family. Thank you Lara for being such a great host!
The cabin is in the country and is very nice and relaxing with pond to look out over, fire pit, hot tub, and grill area. We unfortunately didn't get to be there as much as we would have liked but would like to go back sometime when we have more time to enjoy everything. The only downside is that the loft bedrooms are pretty high up so would need younger people to climb up and sleep there. My 20 and 21 year old really loved them though. Host was extremely nice and accommodating as my plans hadn't worked out as I had hoped so really appreciated this.
We are a group of girlfriends who always get together for our holiday gathering after the hustle and bustle of the season - this year we decided that a getaway close to home was in order. We found this property in between all of us and fell in love. Adorably decorated, in the country, but close to town, room to relax together, fix meals, play games, laugh and just enjoy our friendship. We couldn’t have asked for a better place for our weekend - the cold, snowy weather made it even better for us to hole up. We will definitely be back! We hope to make this an annual retreat for us!
A cozy getaway. The Vickers School provided comfortable accommodations for our wedding weekend stay. The owners were quick to respond with any questions we had during our stay. It was so quiet at night which is a plus for this light sleeper.
This is a unique property! The home, originally built as a one-room schoolhouse, has been beautifully and creatively reimagined as a modern lofted home with a chef's kitchen, renovated bathrooms, and fabulous porches and patios. Imagine a Brooklyn hipster pad in rural Kansas -- if you can -- and that's pretty much what you'll find. We had a wonderful stay for a long-weekend of cycling races in Emporia (just over an hour away) and enjoyed the backyard firepit, the gorgeous hilltop views at sunset, and the mowed walking trails. Plus lots of birdwatching (and being watched by birds)! The region is apparently known for its vineyards; sadly we did not get to visit any of them but we had a wonderful time at the schoolhouse nonetheless and hope to be back next summer. If this place is available, book it without hesitation and enjoy!
