Swim or snorkel in the gentle waves or explore the tropical scenery at this family-friendly beach, backed by Panama trees and a national park.

Panama Beach is a scenic 1.2-mile (2-kilometre) bay with a tranquil atmosphere and soft volcanic sand. It is an ideal spot to take the kids swimming, due to the calm waves, gentle currents and wide sweeps of sand. It is one of the most northern beaches on Costa Rica’s west coast and is near to vast expanses of tropical forests and national parks.

Feel the soft sand between your toes as you amble along the beach and listen to the quiet sound of the waves. Note the array of tropical vegetation beyond the shore, featuring sarno, manchineel and mesquite species, as well as the Panama trees from which the beach takes its name. Explore the intriguing shrubs and trees of the forest with the kids and then cool off with a dip in the ocean.

There is plenty of room for watersports at the beach. Go sailing and take in ocean views of the cliffs and forests in the distance. Try snorkeling or diving to get a closer look at the colourful fish in the clear water. Rent equipment from tour operators and hotels near the beach.

Watch the sun go down behind the cliffs and take photographs as the sky turns crimson. Enjoy a picnic as twilight falls and make the most of the pleasant temperature.

Panama Beach remains relatively undeveloped compared to nearby resort areas, however the beach’s seclusion has made it a magnet for celebrities and wealthy tycoons.

Take a short trip to one of the nearby national parks, such as Las Baulas National Marine Park. Find out about the endangered leatherback turtles that live in the mangrove swamps. See monkeys, crocodiles and other local wildlife.

Panama Beach is just to the north of Coco Beach and Hermosa Bay Beach, on Costa Rica’s west coast. From the province’s capital, Liberia, take a 20-mile (32.2-kilometre) taxi or bus ride west, which should take between 40 minutes and 1 hour.
