Holiday on the east coast of the island of Bornholm in a place of wild scenery, beautiful beaches and a fascinating World War II past.
Travel to the Baltic island harbour town of Nexo for seaside fun, outdoor adventures and hundreds of years’ worth of history. This large fishing port is a welcoming place close to beaches and forested countryside.
Take a walk through the quiet streets of Nexo. Many of the buildings you will come across were part of a huge reconstruction effort following World War II. Toward the end of the conflict Russian bombing decimated much of the town and harbour. One of the buildings that survived is Nexo Church, which is thought to date back to the first half of the 14th century. Go inside and study its decorative features including the 17th-century pulpit.
Another survivor is an 18th-century waterfront sandstone building that used to be Nexo's town hall. Today, it houses the Nexo Museum. Peruse exhibits that cover the local World War II history and the fishing industry here. Also worth a visit is Martin Andersen Nexo’s House, the childhood home of the author of Pelle the Conqueror. This 1910 novel inspired the Oscar-winning film of the same name.
Venture a little outside the town for Dueodde Beach. This long and wide expanse of fine white sand sits at the southern tip of Bornholm. At one end of the beach is Dueodde Lighthouse, a 154-foot (47-metre) tower. Climb up the stairs to enjoy the elevated coastal views.
Discover more of the area's scenic wonder with a hike through Almindingen. This large forest has several walking trails and is about a 15-minute drive west of Nexo. Also worth seeing while you are in the town is the Bornholm Butterfly Park and its free-flying Danish and tropical butterflies.
Experience Nexo's many natural and historical charms by flying from Copenhagen into Ronne, Bornholm’s main town. You can also get to the island by bus or train via a high-speed ferry in Ystad, Sweden. Alternatively, drive and take the ferry from here or the night ferry from Køge, south of Copenhagen. Once you re in Ronne, travel to Nexo by bus or car.
