Nevada City Retreats: Mama Bear's Cabin.
The cozy Mama Bear's Cabin up the hill from Papa Bear's Lodge and Baby Bear's Cottage (see listings #46584, and #72370), is available year round.
The cabin has two bedrooms and 1 bath. Please note that the base rate is for 2 guests only. The additional guest charge is $20/nt. per person up to 5 guests max. There is a queen-size bed, a double bed and double pull-out futon (in living room) to accommodate up to 5 people. It is best suited for up to 4 adults or a family of 4 or 5 with young children.. In the living room is a gas hearth stove that heats the space nicely. The kitchen is equipped with all the basics. Enjoy the large hot tub which awaits just off the back deck. Some games and books are provided for your leisure. This is a great place for the honeymoon couple or small family. If you are booking Papa Bear's Lodge for a larger group, this is the perfect place for overflow guests who want a little more privacy.
Hiking and biking trails are near by. Gold panning, (you can rent pans locally) golf ( at Nevada County Country Club). Kayak and paddle board rentals are available at Scotts Flat Lake or Rollins Lake. We are only 3.5 mies from the beautiful South Yuba River.
Please note that we are next to an 80 acre summer camp. During the months of May-August camp is in session and you will hear 'happy' camp noises from time to time during the day. Quiet hours start at 9:30 p.m for the campers, 10:00p.m. for our cabin guests.
Swimming, tennis and a children's play ground are in Nevada City and Grass Valley. We are just a 45 minute drive to the nearest ski area for downhill or cross country skiing, and sledding. Downtown Nevada City is two and a half miles away, where you will find fine dining, wine tasting, great theater, musical entertainment, art galleries and a fun shopping experience in this charming historic gold rush town.
Historic Grass Valley is just another three miles away with more of the same, and we are 1 1/2 hours drive from either Sacramento or Tahoe.
Amenities: Down comforters on some beds (in winter). Satellite TV, DVD/CD player, DSL and wifi, gas hearth stove, ample parking. There is a phone for local calls. ** Cell phones do not work well here but you can text or use wifi calling. The internet is slow and the wifi can be spotty. It's all we can get out here.
This is a non-smoking property.
If you are celebrating a special occasion, let us know and we will gladly make dinner reservations for you, or obtain special items such as Champagne, Chocolates, or a Special Bouquet.
PLEASE CHECK WITH OUR LOCAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OR SPECIFIC BUSINESSES FOR MORE INFORMATION.
Activities: Theater, fine dining, wine tasting, musical events, shopping, galleries, hiking and biking, boating, fishing, swimming, tennis and other outdoor activities are all located within a short distance.
Come join us for the Fourth of July small town parade. It is wonderful, as is the Constitution Day parade in September. In June on Father's Day weekend come see the famous bike races down the middle of town. In July we have three 'Summer Nights', the last three Wednesdays in the month. The streets are closed to traffic and lined with food and craft vendors. In July is the return of the Worldfest with 8 stages of music, children's programs, workshops, dance, artisans and international food.
Don't miss the Bluegrass Festival, Music In The Mountains, Halloween, Mardi Gras, Fall colors, etc., etc., etc.
Enjoy Victorian Christmas, the first three Wednesday nights, and the last Sunday before Christmas. You'll find artisans, food vendors and all the shops open late. The gas streetlights, Victorian carolers, and friendly merchants make this the place to visit and shop for the holidays.
Area: The Yuba River, with many deep pools and massive smooth boulders is only minutes from our home. A beautiful trail meanders along its banks for miles. Lake Vera is a small lake surrounded by summer camps. Our cabins are located on 5 acres next to Camp Augusta. In the summer months (late May to mid August) you can hear 'happy camp sounds' as children enjoy swimming, zip lining and singing around the camp fire, then off to bed by 9:30, quiet hour.
We want your lodging experience to be most enjoyable. Part of that enjoyment comes from selecting the vacation property that best fits your needs. Mama Bear’s Cabin was built in 1985 and is 650 sq. ft., a good space for 2 to 4 people. The style is simple, clean and unpretentious. The kitchen is equipped with all the basics you need for cooking, but if you are a gourmet chef, this may not be the place for you. Some of the dishes are hand made pottery. Not everything matches. There is no dishwasher. Garbage needs to be disposed of carefully to avoid attracting those wild critters. Collecting compost scraps and recycling is required, and a conservative energy usage strongly encouraged. There is no central heat. There is a hearth stove, a wall furnace. and a window air conditioner. Please feel free to contact should you have questions or concerns after booking or during your stay. Note: Wifi is AT&T and is unreliable. Checking emails is usually ok, but surfing the net is hit or miss. If you need better wifi, please consider another option.

It was so peaceful and secluded, even though you are just 3 miles from downtown Nevada City. We loved the cabin and will absolutely be booking again. Comfy beds, kitchen is well stocked and the trees and stars cannot be bear! The hot tub was great.
We had a wonderful time. It was a clean, comfortable, and cozy stay. Rene was very helpful with recommendations and we really enjoyed our time. We will definitely be back!
We had a little difficulty locating the cabin; but once we were there, we had a great time. Enjoyed the wooded surroundings, hot tub, and well equipped games.
A friend and I enjoyed a relaxing, unplugged long weekend. Mama Bear Cabin was just as described, a little rustic and thoroughly comfortable. Nevada City was charming and the South Yuba River area never disappoints. Highlights were independence Trail and Malakoff Diggins.
Great property. In nature, hot tub , electric fireplace, comfy bed, area, beautiful trees close to downtown Nevada City but far enough away that you feel like your in the country.
Rene was wonderful with communication and making sure I had a great stay. Really loved being at Mama Bears and will definitely come back.
Great place for three friends attending a retreat in the Nevada City area. Futon bed in living room served as a third bedroom. Enjoyed the hot tub. Kitchen great, cooked both nights. Communication with the owner was easy. Definitely recommend.
We made many happy memories in this cabin. There was a family of deer that visits every day. The setting was so peaceful and relaxing. Both Rene and Drue were great communicators and accomodating. The hot tub was a nice touch.
This cabin is great. It’s a very short drive to downtown Nevada city, maybe 10 min. It’s super cozy and the hot tub is fantastic. Very quiet and private. The bed was very comfortable. We loved the gas fireplace. There’s plenty of towels and extra sheets if needed. Yes, there’s bad cell service and the WiFi isn’t great but they definitely let you know that ahead of time. We were more than fine with that. The owner communication is great. I highly recommend!
My friend & I fell in love at first sight with Mama Bear's cabin. Everything --all the lovely touches in decor, the sweet bears throughout, artful lamps & beautiful quilts --all of this shows so much care and loving attention. The setting is gorgeous. I loved looking out at the brilliant green pines with sunlight filtering through.
Rene and Drue have furnished the cabin generously, with everything one could need to feel cozy, comfortable, welcome, and well cared-for. Thank you so much! We hope to return.
Comfy beds and love a hot tub. Quiet and private location. View of the woods. Property is a bit messy. No cell service as expected, and cabin wifi was unusable. Had some cleanliness bumps of cobwebs aplenty and some kitchenware needing cleaned before use. Not as fully stocked of a kitchen or supplies in as good of shape as we expected from reviews, but we made do. Loft ladder is dicey and living/dining is sparse. Overall a quaint stay in a beautiful area.
My husband and I live in a small city and were ready for some relaxation "away from it all." We got exactly that at Mama Bear's cabin. We spent three nights in February and loved the private, cozy ambience. Despite the woodsy, rural feel of the property, everything you could want to do in the Nevada City/Grass Valley area is an easy 9 to 15 minutes away. The cabin was comfortable and welcoming. The heat had been turned on before we arrived, which was a lovely touch that allowed us to settle in easily. All amenities were in good working order, and the instructions provided were clear and easy to find. We hope to return when the weather is warm enough to enjoy the nearby lakes and rivers.
A small cozy cabin with a hot tub. Tough to find in the dark, Look for the red light to point the way to the mama bear cabin. First impression was the spiders are big and plenty. It was very dusty/cobwebby at first which may aggravate your sinuses (owner was kind/courteous and had their cleaner come by). The hot tub was very relaxing and the kitchen had everything we needed to make a nice dinner. The ladder going up to the loft is sketchy, I wouldn’t recommend using it if you are afraid of falling.
We had a lovely stay. It was a perfect 3 day getaway from SF. The cabin was just as listed. My only advice - make sure to arrive while it’s light out - it would be challenging to find the cabin for the first time in the dark.
We had a wonderful time at Mama Bear‘s cabin. It’s such a comfortable property. Everything worked well, and we loved the hot tub. The beds were extremely comfortable too! We would definitely like to come back and stay again.
Mama Bear's cabin was the most charming and secluded getaway in what feels like your own, private woods. It is cozy with an old-time cabin quaintness, plus it's immaculately clean. We loved watching the deer from the deck with our coffees in the morning. Perfect for our family of 3 and our dog.
We stayed here already 4 times and we love it. This time we brought our granddaughter and she likes to go back next year. Just the internet wasn’t really working .
A sweet little cabin near the Yuba River and Nevada City, CA. We stayed for Thanksgiving weekend. The kitchen is modest, but we found everything we needed to make an amazing Friendsgiving feast! And we brought a few of our own tools just in case. We enjoyed the hot tub off the back porch under the canopy of oaks and pines. We loved playing games in the warmth of the "wood" stove (gas). The property is wild and wooded with 3 cabins of differing sizes - Papa, Mama and Baby. We saw hawks, deer, squirrels and turkeys. There are trailheads nearby and Nevada City is a 10 minute drive for sundries, restaurants, etc.. We had a very peaceful and quiet time here.
