Valentines Get Away

Our stay was fantastic! My wife and I loved everything about this place. The location has amazing views and wildlife that make you feel so far off the beaten path. The house was comfy and easy to fit right home. What truly made this experience was our hosts. Margret and her husband Derito were so sweet and kind. They checked in on us, made us pumpkin cake, and were truly so kind. It was clear they take so much pride in their space and making guests feel welcome. I will absolutely be visiting again!

Great property and home!

Our entire family thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this property - the amenities (pool table, pond/fishing, and firepit), location and cleanliness. It was always a sanctuary to retreat to after busy days of seeing the sights around the Black Hills. We will definitely stay again on future visits.

Family of 5 Black Hills Vacation

This property is amazing. We are a family of 5, with 3 kids under 6 years old. The house itself is spotless, and has everything you need. We spent the majority of the time exploring the 40 acres and relaxing. The kids loved the pond and our son caught a fish. The homeowners are there if you have questions, but respected our space and gave us privacy. I’d HIGHLY recommend this property if you’re looking to relax on a scenic, secluded acreage in The Hills.

Wonderful experience!!!

After reading reviews of this property I didn't hesitate to book!!! We are frequent travelers and have stayed at numerous VRBO locations and this one was perfection! It exceeded all of our expectations. From the moment we arrived we were in awe of the absolutely beautiful grounds of the property! The house was immaculate inside and the kitchen well stocked for meal preparation! My kids had fun fishing the pond while we relaxed on the deck! Margaret and Derito were the best hosts and so friendly! Margaret made the most amazing dessert for us (like so good my kids asked if I could get the recipe)! I could go on and on about how much fun we had here! Look no further and book Custer Camp!

Hidden Haven

This is a wonderful property. We were in town for a hockey tournament in Rapid City and wanted something other than a hotel to stay. There was plenty of sleeping room for our family and two dogs. Derito was very generous, he brought us wine on our first night and offered fishing polls to our sons. The location is perfect. We were close enough to Rapid City for the hockey tournament yet nestled in the hills. We enjoyed riding ATVs, sitting in the hot tub, grilling, and playing games on the patio. Our dogs enjoyed visiting with Bella and unfortunately, our Pomeranian enjoyed eating the carpet (Derito was very understanding and calm about).

Picture Perfect

This place really is picture perfect, it’s that beautiful. Two of the best host I have ever met in my lifetime. I would have loved to stay another week, the weather was fabulous, the scenery was amazing. It’s a quiet, comfortable, peaceful place to relax and just enjoy life. The trout pond is exactly what they say it is, fully stocked, I fished the day before we were to leave, caught a very nice trout. Mr Bonicelli not only cleaned the fish, he sealed it air tight, put it in his freezer, the next morning he give me a cooler put the fish in it, packed it with ice and frozen ice bags for my 22 hour trip back home. I highly recommend this place if you’re looking for a place to stay in this neck of the woods, you will not be disappointed. I want to thank the Bonicelli family agin for their hospitality. Check there place out you will love it

Above and beyond anything we expected!

Five stars is not nearly enough stars for this property. Our time at Custer Camp 1874 was above and beyond anything we expected from a vacation rental. Margaret and Derito were some of our favorite VRBO hosts ever — their hospitality was over the top!! Communication leading up to our stay was the best we’ve experienced. We didn’t realize when we booked that the owners lived on the property and we were staying on the lower level of their home — and what a home it is! The queen bunk beds and down pillows were even more comfortable than our beds at home, the pool table was a hit with the guys in the evenings, and the kitchen and bathroom were well appointed by any standards. The gorgeous 40-acre property in Nemo was centrally located to all of the places we wanted to visit — Lead, Deadwood, Spearfish, Custer National Park, and of course Mt. Rushmore. The drive through the hills to the property is gorgeous, the trout pond on site was perfect for my son to get in a little fishing practice (be sure to ask about Custer enjoying this water too!), the hammock and swing by the pond were lovely for afternoon book reading, and seeing the Milky Way from the hot tub in the evening was the perfect way to end our visit. These hosts really know how to VRBO!! We love your hospitality, Margaret and Derito, and we can’t wait to come back!

Simply the BEST!

We feel blessed to be able to share such a beautiful location and home. The Bocelli’s are truly the salt of the earth. From the moment we met we were treated like family. They are not intrusive in anyway but are there whenever you need them. The description of the property is spot on. The cleanliness was impeccable. Communication was flawless, and Margaret went above and beyond to work with us through some changing schedules. The quiet of nature surrounds this place with deer and elk visits daily. The trout pond was exciting to fish and Derito was so gracious to smoke one for us. It was outstanding!! We love the decor, and a well-stocked kitchen. The bathroom was spacious, the pool table was a bonus, and thankfully a much appreciated washer and dryer. The bedroom is truly that, a room full of beds! The mattress was comfortable, with enough room to change if you needed privacy. I have booked many VRBOs, but have never had one that had a private “high end” grill and a smoker available to use. They also provided a great outdoor sitting and dining space. The hot tub looked clean and awesome although we didn’t partake. Property is close to anything you want to see in the Black Hills, but really it was just as exciting to get back to enjoy nature. Custer Camp is truly the place to be. If you are looking for a place to call home for your vacation, book early, you will not regret it.

Best place around!

Couldn't have asked for a better property, location, or hosts! From the property, Custer State Park and Mt. Rushmore 45-60min drive, Wonderland Cave 5-min, Rapid City 40-45min, Spearfish about an hour. Beautiful drives too - Very curvy, hilly but truly remarkable countryside. If you're coming out for the hiking, ask them about nearby Rock Maze - Fun, unique and devoid of other people. Owners were absolutely splendid, friendly and accommodating. They were available for providing recommendations and happy to have us and our 10 and 6 year old running around their truly gigantic property, but stayed out of our way and easy to maintain privacy. When we did see them, they were a pleasure to be around. The unit is the first floor built into a hillside and completely separate from the owner's unit on the 2nd floor. Separate bedroom and kitchen, bath includes jetted tub, separate shower and toilet areas. Appliances and finishes were all updated, modern, clean, and lots of attention to detail for making you feel at home, but still maintains lots of charm with décor. Trout pond is yours to enjoy and includes a large covered seating area - About a 2-min walk down the hill from the unit. Outdoor hot tub very clean and modern. Hammock, outdoor seating adjacent to unit, gas grills, etc. Lovely birds singing and visiting the feeders, but very quiet and serene at night. Dog and three cats on property are friendly but will leave you alone if you want too. You won't be disappointed!

Winter at Custer Camp, home of Margaret & Derito Bonicellli

My son and I and the family dog spent a few days before Christmas as well as Christmas Day in 2018 at this cabin. This year with the abundant snow in the Black Hills we decided to ride the snowmobile trails. When deciding where to say it was such as easy choice. This cabin has everything you can expect. The kitchen is fully stocked so you can cook your own meals, you can even grill out if you choose to do so. There is a comfy living room with satellite TV, a variety of movies, and a pool table for your entertainment. There is a large bathroom with a shower and a separate jetted tub for you to relax in. They also have a hot tub for you to enjoy at the end of the day and take in some star gazing. They have a trout pond that is open year-round so you can try your luck at fishing. I personally enjoyed sitting outside and enjoying the scenery whether during the day or the stars at night and hearing the gentle breeze blow through the tall pines. There is just something both relaxing and eerie about hearing the breeze blow through the tall pines especially at night. If you are looking for someplace to just relax and unwind, this would be the place. Or, if you like to drive through the Black Hills and site see this cabin is centrally located between Rapid City, Sturgis, and Deadwood. It is also close to Keystone and Hill City to take the sites and activities of these small little tourist towns. There home is located south of Sturgis right off Vannocker Canyon Road, which I have to say is just as beautiful of a drive as Spearfish Canyon. I just want to end this review by saying how welcoming Margaret and Derito Bonicelli are as hosts. I have stayed at one other cabin in the Black Hills. At that cabin, I had never met the hosts and were never able to contact them when I needed something or had a question. Margaret and Derito truly enjoy having guests and sharing their beautiful property. I personally cannot wait till spring/summer so that I can return to stay at their beautiful cabin and take in the beautiful Black Hills on ATV’s. I look forward to seeing them and possibly challenge them to a little fishing tournament. In closing I would say whether you are alone, or have a family, or need a girl or guys weekend and are looking for a beautiful place to stay with kind caring hosts Margaret and Derito Bonicelli (Custer Camp) is the place to stay. Book with them and experience for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

A beautiful property and wonderful owners

Our family stayed here for 4 nights and explored the Black Hills. The owners are very friendly and helpful. I would recommend this rental to anyone looking in the area! The trout pond was great for the kids! As stated in the listing, this is only the lower half of the house, as the owners live here full time. We had zero issues with the owners on site while we were there, it was actually nice getting insight from them!

If there were a hall of fame for VRBO hosts, Margaret and Derito would be first ballot unanimously elected members. Margaret made us a delicious dessert while Derito cleaned, brined, and smoked us a delicious rainbow trout from their beautiful pond. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the beauty of our surroundings, but the hosts made this the best experience ever. If you’re planning a stay anywhere near Vanocker canyon this is a great place to spend your vacation.

Great Stay!

This property is amazing. The home itself is very cozy and has everything you need for your stay. The surrounding area is very peaceful and beautiful. We had a great time fishing in the pond and spending time with the residents (both animals and people). We felt like family while we were there. Hopefully we can return soon!
