The neighborhood
Scarborough has lifeguards from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day and a big pavilion with restrooms, showers and a snack bar. It's one of Rhode Island's most popular beaches, so peak summer weekends are busy; walking in means parking is never your problem. From the north end of the beach, a coastal trail leads out to Black Point and its old stone mansion ruins. For calmer water with little ones, Roger Wheeler State Beach sits behind a breakwater, about 5 minutes away by car.

A few minutes' drive gets you clam cakes at Aunt Carrie's (seasonal), doughboys at Iggy's, and the fishing boats in Galilee, Rhode Island's largest commercial fishing port. The Block Island Ferry leaves from Galilee, about 6 minutes from the house, and Point Judith Lighthouse is about the same. Narragansett Town Beach and the Pier are about 10 minutes away, Newport about 35, Providence 45 to 50, and Mystic about 50. Kingston Amtrak station is about 25 minutes.
