About this property

The Sawmill Inn - pre-Civil War luxury log cabin on 70+ private acres!

  • Escape to The Sawmill Inn, a truly unique historic retreat where heritage, conservation, and natural beauty come together. Transport yourself back in time to the pre-Civil War-era at this 3 bedroom/2.5 bathroom luxury log cabin homestead! Perched atop a private knoll in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, Sawmill Inn was reborn from the bones of two 1850s log cabins reclaimed from their original home sites in Shenandoah County. Set on more than 70 private acres of rolling countryside, forests, meadows, and walking trails, this remarkable property offers guests a chance to slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience a piece of history.

This newly re-constructed cabin captivates visitors with exquisite rustic beauty, modern construction appointments, and enchanting antique decor. Sawmill Inn showcases authentic hand-hewn log construction and carefully preserved architectural details that reflect the craftsmanship and traditions of an earlier era. Built upon the site of an old sawmill, the cabin's name pays homage to the property's legacy. Explore every little detail of this remarkable cabin, then explore the entire 70+ acre property on miles of maintained trails.

Please review the listing photos carefully. Sawmill Inn is a one-of-a-kind gem with curated rustic character infused with modern comforts. It's an exceptional vacation home for families and small groups of adults looking for a tranquil, private location where nature provides both serenity and entertainment. The property sleeps six very comfortably.

    FEATURES & AMENITIES
The cabin's 1/4 mile long gravel driveway warps visitors into yesteryear through a wooded canopy that yields to wildflower meadows framing the cabin and parking area. Take three easy steps up from the parking area into the grand covered entryway illuminated by an antler chandelier. Enter the home through the main door, or stroll around the wide, covered, and well-appointed wrap-around porch. Upon entry, a classy slate foyer greets guests with instant wonderment. The foyer features a half bath, laundry closet, and joins the two reconstructed log cabins - big cabin on the right; little cabin on the left.

Enter the "big cabin" to the right of the foyer. It features a well-stocked large rustic-modern kitchen with handmade custom cabinets, dining room that seats eight next to a stone gas log fireplace, and access to the front and rear porches. Marvel at the details while climbing the reclaimed timber staircase to the second floor. There, guests find two bedrooms (one with queen bed, one with two twin beds), a full bathroom with restored cast iron claw-foot tub & shower, and a quiet reading nook that showcases a photo wall of the two original log cabins prior to reclamation.

Enter the "small cabin" to the left of the foyer. It features a spacious living room with comfy curated furniture, a small Smart TV, access to the rear deck, and another reclaimed timber staircase up to a suite (double/full) with a stunning full bathroom.

Although Sawmill Inn transports guests back 175 years, it also transcends time with the modern comforts we crave. The cabin has central heat & air conditioning, modern stainless-steel appliances (fridge, range, dishwasher, microwave), coffee maker (filters and coffee provided), ceiling fans on the covered side deck, a laundry center, one Smart TV, and Starlink WiFi internet running at over 100+ mbps. Need to work or join a Zoom meeting at an 1850s-style homestead? No problem!

Exit through the main entry door or French doors by the kitchen to enjoy the wrap-around covered porch. Both spacious and cozy, it features seven seating areas, two ceiling fans to cool down the hottest days, and a peaceful view of the woods and wildflower meadow. No neighbors, no road noise, no light pollution - only the sounds and sights of nature while enjoying morning coffee, wildlife watching, or simply relaxing in the fresh air.

Exit through the dining room patio door or little cabin back door to enjoy the rear open-air deck. There, guests find a table, four chairs and umbrella, a propane grill (added since photos were taken), and access to a huge back yard. Follow the stone walkway to the large slate patio with elevated stone fireplace and a covered shed with ample firewood -- an ideal setting for conversation, stargazing, and making lasting memories. Kids young and old will enjoy the sturdy timber swing set and climbing area.

Explore the backyard's treeline to find entrances to several maintained trails that traverse the property's 70+ acres. Sawmill Inn is dedicated to the conservation of native wildlife and pollinators. The property's meadows, woodlands, and natural habitats are managed to support birds, butterflies, bees, and other beneficial species. Wander the private trails and discover seasonal wildflowers, listen to songbirds, and experience the beauty of a landscape where nature is allowed to thrive.

Important note: while guests will not experience human neighbors, they will encounter a variety of original residents. This may include a variety of bugs & spiders (we ask that you keep the cabin's doors closed so they stay outside). Other natural neighbors include a variety of songbirds, owls, and hawks. Furry residents may include deer, fox, raccoons, opossum, squirrels, chipmunks, field mice, and perhaps an occasional black bear or fisher cat. Guests may also encounter a variety of snakes and turtles. Our natural neighbors are not aggressive, prefer to be left alone, and prefer to leave humans alone. Please do not feed the wildlife or leave food outside. Please fasten trashcan lids firmly. Please be mindful of your natural neighbors and don't be afraid. Watch them and marvel at their unique talents as they go about their jobs in the way nature intends. Professional pest control treats the cabin regularly, which is an effective - but not a perfect - deterrent.

Whether you're exploring the trails, enjoying quiet moments on the porch, relaxing by the fire, or admiring the history preserved within the home's walls, The Sawmill Inn offers a rare combination of rustic elegance, environmental stewardship, and timeless charm.

We supply this cabin with bedding (pillows, bedspreads, blankets), fresh bed linens, one towel set per max occupants, one travel-size bar soap per max occupants, two rolls of toilet paper per bathroom, four dishwasher tabs, five trash bags, one bath trash bag per bathroom, one paper towel roll, two kitchen dish towels, one travel-size dish soap, and one scrubby pad. We encourage guests with large groups, or who are staying several nights, or who are heavy users of consumable supplies to bring extra supplies or purchase them at the local Basye Community Store.
