About this property
WE ARE OPEN! Authentic log cabin on Paint Creek, 0.5 mi to Appalachian Trail
Viking Mountain Lodge is an old, 2200 square foot log cabin located inside the Cherokee National Forest near the Appalachian Trail. The cabin sits high up in the Smoky Mountains about halfway between the quaint mountain town of Hot Springs, North Carolina and the historic town of Greeneville, Tennessee. The two story structure is made of rough cut hemlock logs that are hand hewn on the exterior side. With four bedrooms and two full bathrooms, VML has the ability to sleep 15 guests making it well suited for large groups or family reunions.
VML overlooks Paint Creek which runs the width of the four acre property. Whether you’re sitting on the front porch in the handmade cypress furniture, on the deck in the rocking/adirondack chairs, or inside with the windows open, you can listen to the peaceful melody from the rushing waters of Paint Creek. Our guests frequently comment that this alone is worth trip to Viking Mountain Lodge. There is a fire pit in the front yard down by the water’s edge for roasting marshmallows or keeping warm on a cool evening. You can trout fish in the creek or catch bream in the larger of the two ponds on the property.
Go for a day hike on the AT. Have a picnic on top of Camp Creek Bald. Go whitewater rafting on the French Broad River. Fly fish Big Laurel Creek. Head to historic Greeneville Tennessee and visit one of the many museums. Most of all, RELAX!
Although the cabin is rustic, it has all of the amenities of home; a large, fully stocked kitchen, washer and dryer, linens, towels, wood stove, gas fireplace, 6 brand new ceiling fans, gas/charcoal/smoker combination grill, and even a 50” HDTV with Bose sound bar for those cold or rainy days. All of this in a spacious, clean cabin decorated with numerous Bev Doolittle prints and many pieces of antique furniture. PLEASE NOTE: The cabin does not have air conditioning. Like most homes in the area, it’s typically not needed. Also, there is no internet or cell service at the cabin. Most people find it very refreshing to unplug and spend some undistracted time with each other and with nature. Please keep these things in mind when booking.

We've stayed at VML several times now and we love coming back! It's close to the Cherokee National Forest and is kind of in a central location for us for bear season.
Our family loves this cabin. It is well laid out and accommodated all 9 of us including 3 dogs. We appreciated the break from cell phones and social media, and spent a great amount of time playing board games and watching old movies together as a family. We highly recommend!
Alan you have a very nice and cozy cabin. We enjoy our stay there. We where 10 family members from Durham. We had enjoyed our weekend with family visiting from El Salvador.
This was the perfect cabin for 4 hiking men to stay in. Everything was well done. We used all four spacious bedrooms. The table and kitchen was very good.Overall, this place is Highly recommended!!!Rustic looking from the outside but charming and well decorated from the inside
Nice cabin, spacious older, log style cabin, all the features and amenities that you need only thing I did not like was no window coverings on the main floor….. if you like darkness at night this is the cabin to be at..Enjoyed it very much
Everything about the cabin was great. My family and i enjoyed it. The no cell service took a little time to get use too but it was nice hanging out with family with no phone's in the way.
I booked this place for my husband and his 2 friends for his 40th birthday weekend. Knowing there was no internet beforehand was great and that's why he wanted this one! They hiked around and had a great time, great place to stay.
Quiet, semi-secluded with a nice firepit and supply of wood.
The paint creek is beautiful, with safe entry access across the property.
The decks and porch give you comfortable choices, and the outdoor grill is in great working order.
Over-all a nice stay.
Beautiful location along a small creek, 4 bedrooms for comfortable sleeping, fully stocked kitchen, visit the top of Viking Mountain for breathtaking sunrises or sunsets and a wide view for miles. We had a wonderful time at the cabin.
Alan was a great host! The cabin was extremely clean, and had so much space! The kids loved the fire pit and yard games and the stream! Kitchen was easy to cook in- at first it was hard with no service but was SO NICE to disconnect! We can wait to come back during warmer weather
Great location for a get away with no cell or internet coverage at the cabin.Ma and PA restaurant was one of the friendliest I have ever encountered, food was pretty good also, just different from what I am used too.
We rented Viking Mountain Lodge for my mom’s 80th birthday (4 adults and 1 yellow lab). The cabin is as advertised - beautiful location and everything we needed. recommend the drive to the top of Viking Mountain and the hike to Blackstack Cliffs. The village of Hot Springs is really cool and the AT runs straight through downtown. Highly recommend this cabin to anyone wanting to hike parts of the Appalachian Trail!
Our stay was fantastic, we were there mostly for hiking and exploring. The unplugged was very nice (yes there really is NO sevice). It was hot but we happend to come during a heat wave. Beds were comfy, cabin was beautiful, neighbor was nice, Alan was very helpful, and always answered back. Would stay again!
Very rustic. But well equipped. Beautiful area. Wish we had more time to explore the area and hike a little but we were busy with wedding events all weekend.
This is our fourth year, staying here with a family of 10 sometimes 12 and a small dog. We absolutely love it here. The house is very clean. Plenty of games for the kids to do Etc. Has everything that you need for a weeklong stay. Our forever family vacation spot! See you again next year!
Our whole family stayed together as we came to Greeneville for my son's wedding. This cabin was perfect for us since it kept our family together in one place. However, it was further perfect for us, because it was in good proximity to the town, and was a beautiful location for us to have some great family time. The cabin is very comfortable and had all we needed. We greatly enjoyed our stay, and love this property! Thank you very much!
This property was very quiet and peaceful. Our family of 10 that stayed here loved it the kids played on the hills and by the creek from sun up to sun down. House stayed warm without using the wood burning stove. And there was plenty of space.
The location is remote and I needed this time away. Work regularly takes over my waking hours and our short time here allowed me to reconnect with the grandchildren. Thank you!
Wife I and my sister her husband and their daughter came along with us . The cabin was cosy in the mountains didn’t need air condition at all and beautiful country side.
We just returned from our week stay at VML. The rustic cabin is located on beautiful property with a creek flowing through it. Relaxing in the mornings sitting on the covered porch drinking a coffe and listening to the water was what we needed. The cabin was clean and had everything we needed. Even though there was no air conditioning, the celling fans kept us cool at night. Would highly recommend this property. Allan was a great host.
Looking forward to our next stay at VML.
