About this property
Very private luxury log home - Now with free 5G Wi-Fi!
You begin to feel it from the moment you turn down the driveway and meander through the canopy of trees, shot through with shafts of sunlight. Subconsciously at first, you inhale a little deeper and then exhale just a little slower than usual. The bustle of life fades quickly as natures envelopes you. The Keep appears across a quiet pasture, nestled at the edge of the woods. The driveway makes its final bend, and Sylvan Keep unfolds. The corners of your mouth tip upward. Your shoulders rise an inch. Do they seem lighter already? Can’t be….
But then you get out of the car and step into the magic of Sylvan Keep. You’re on vacation, and yet somehow you’ve come home. You were meant to be here. Before you know it, you are under her spell.
Why do we call it Sylvan Keep? It’s the place to keep dreams and memories; the place to keep family and love; the place to get your balance. Medieval Europe was dotted with castles. They were the center of village life, the fortress of defense, and the home of the landowner. The castle keep was at the center; the innermost and strongest structure. It served as both a home and the last line of defense in case of attack. Sylvan is the Latin word for woods. This beautiful forest retreat is the perfect spot to escape the world and recharge your spirit.
Sylvan Keep is the place to clear the mind, restore the soul, and inspire the heart. Find your strength and your center again. Regroup and recharge. Sylvan Keep beckons.
About Sylvan Keep…..
Sylvan Keep is an authentic log home on nearly 18 acres in beautiful Bath County, Virginia. A wet-weather stream runs beside the house, with many small pools and waterfalls in season. A small foot bridge crosses the stream, and a walking trail leads to the national forest and a world of exploration.
The house has excellent outdoor living spaces that bring nature up close. A covered stone front porch adjoins a full-length side deck on the shady side of the house that overlooks the stream. Next, a screened porch with dining option opens to a smaller rear grilling deck. A small waterfall trickles into the rock-lined goldfish pond in front of the house.
Inside offers surprising space and luxury. The front door opens to a vaulted great room with beautiful cherry floors, tongue-in-groove wood ceiling, exposed beams, and a wall of windows that displays the sylvan beauty outside. The centerpiece of the great room is a two-story, semi-round, stone fireplace equipped with remote-controlled gas logs.
The kitchen at Sylvan Keep is ready for real cooking. It is fully stocked with quality pots and pans, bakeware, cookie sheets, serving dishes, plates, utensils, wine glasses, etc. The pantry has a fairly extensive spice selection and basic staples like flour and sugar. Other amenities include granite countertops, an island with breakfast bar, gas range/oven, coffee maker and filters, side-by-side refrigerator with ice maker and ice crusher, mixer, picnic supplies, microwave, toaster, griddle, measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, and food storage containers.
The main floor master suite at Sylvan Keep is warm and inviting. It features cherry floors, a walk-in closet, an oak bedroom suite with queen bed and plush memory foam mattress, and a spacious private bath with jetted tub and separate shower.
The first floor also has a cozy den with TV, DVD player, and sofa that makes into a double bed. Sheets and mattress topper for extra comfort are stored in the master bedroom walk-in closet. There is a half bath adjacent to the den for convenient use as an overflow bedroom.
The second floor has two additional bedrooms, a full bath, and a large loft with 70” HD TV and DVD player. The Keep also has a record player, CD player, and radio. Bring your own, or check out something from our collection of DVDs, CDs, and records. Roku set up with the flat screen HDTV allows guests to stream free music and movies, or choose moves to watch through their own Hulu or Netflix accounts.
The second floor front bedroom overlooks the fish pond. It features a vaulted, tongue-in-groove wood ceiling with exposed beams and a king-sized bed with medium-firm memory foam mattress. A vintage Victorian door forms the headboard, and a deacon’s bench provides sitting area. A wicker sleigh and a bentwood rocker round out the eclectic appeal of this room. Open the windows in the summer, and fall asleep to the trickle of the waterfall and the occasional croak of the frogs.
The third bedroom is perfect for the kids. It has a custom bunk bed set with wrought-iron hardware and wood rung ladder. The only problem is deciding whether the top bunk or the bottom bunk is cooler.
We want your stay at Sylvan Keep to be as relaxing as possible. That starts with eliminating things to pack. The Keep is thoroughly stocked with bath towels, hand towels, wash cloths, bar soap, body soap, shampoo, conditioner, hair dryers, toilet paper, paper towels, first aid kit, dishwasher detergent, etc. Beds always have freshly laundered sheets, and there are varieties of pillows, blankets, and quilts to satisfy various preferences stored in the closets.
Sylvan Keep is a rare blend of rural tranquility with pampered luxury. It offers all the privacy and solitude of a mountain retreat without giving up any of the comforts of home. We invite you to come and experience her charm.
Normal check in is at 4pm and check out is at 11am. We will advise if late check out or early check in is available based on other reservations. We also prefer bookings be made a minimum of 72 hours prior to check in please.

We loved the comfort and amenities, combined with a beautiful, tranquil setting. The rooms and kitchen are well appointed, and the comfy living room with fireplace is a restive haven on chilly fall nights. The mountains are especially beautiful in fall, and Sylvan Keep is a fantastic place to enjoy the colors and scenery that abounds! We’ve returned to this cabin many times because it’s just SO Good!
This is a great property for a relaxing stay. Enjoyed the hiking and wildlife viewing. Lots of books and movies to enjoy also. It’s well off the beaten path, but well worth the effort to get there.
We had a great time at this property. The home is beautiful and has plenty of privacy and outdoor space to enjoy. It is very remote, but neighbors are not too far away. Absolutely enjoy the warm springs bath house. Very friendly and comfortable atmosphere. If you love the outdoors, this is the perfect peace that you're craving.
We absolutely loved staying at this cabin! In a quiet, secluded location, this cabin is the perfect place for a relaxing stay in the mountains. It is spacious and well appointed, and the hosts have thought of everything you could need.
Definitely go for a soak at the Warm Springs nearby- you’ll be glad you did!
This is our second time staying at Sylvan Keep, and the fall colors were magnificent! The house and location are perfect for a quiet weekend getaway, and the hosts are attentive and keep the place in good order. Thank you for a lovely weekend!
This place and location are beyond words! We had an amazing stay at Sylvan Keep! The hosts have thought of every detail! We loved the remote location and being able to hike right out the front door was awesome. The Christmas decorations made it magical would defintely atay here again!
thw front door is awesime!
Everything was clean and as described. The kitchen is well-stocked. The beds and bed linens are very comfortable. The property is a real gem and we loved exploring the trail around the property. The porch was so peaceful. It is a perfect getaway cabin and we hope to be back!
This was our fourth annual trip to Sylvan Keep, and it never disappoints! We always look forward to the quiet, peaceful retreat away from home and work responsibilities. The Foxes are fantastic hosts, and they provide everything you'd ever need on a getaway trip - a fully stocked kitchen and pantry, linens, toiletries, a gas firepit, and maps for hiking around the expansive property. We were lucky enough this year to get a pleasant rain for many hours, and sitting on the screened porch listening to nothing but the sound of raindrops on the rooftop and surrounding forest was magical. We often forget how inundated with noise we are until our yearly getaway to Sylvan Keep!We enjoyed several antique malls (Duke's Antiques, Three Seasons Antiques), the Boxerwood Nature Center and Woodland Garden, and Pure Eats Diner. Driving down Maury River Road (Route 39) and seeing the leaves starting to change was a a treat. We stopped by on overlook and took the steps down to the creek. It was gorgeous!Thank you to the Foxes for being fantastic hosts and for providing this beautiful place we love so much!
My two daughters and I had a fantastic stay at Sylvan Keep. It’s totally serene at the house and couldn’t be cozier. But it’s an easy drive to lots of great hikes and beautiful towns to explore. We can’t recommend it enough.
Amazing… beautiful… had everything… I started a game to see if I could come up with something they didn’t have… I lost!!! lol. Cleanliness was amazing, comfort was amazing, deep in the forest with a silence I’ve rarely heard…. We will be back… ohhhhh and the bonus was Scott!!!! He was an AMAZING HOST!!!!!!!! THANKFUL AND GRATEFUL!
First the bad, my wife fell in love with the kitchen from day one and now wants to remodel our kitchen. That is the only negative I can say about this cabin. It is truly an isolated cabin in the woods. The cabin is fully furnished with everything you need, minus food and personal hygiene items. We spent 7 days on this stay and only left the cabin to go sightseeing 3 times. The rest of the time was spent on the deck enjoying nature. If you truly want to escape reality and have you time, this is the place for you. If you’re looking for attractions to visit you will have to do some driving to get to them. The cabin is spacious, well-furnished and maintained. There are 2 stairwells without child gates so if you have toddlers you will have to keep an eye on them. There is all the room you need for children to roam the woods and have fun outside. To my surprise there was not an issue with the bugs/mosquitoes running you off the patio during our stay. We seen deer almost every day from the patio in the morning or evening hours. I highly recommend this cabin. The only improvement I would recommend is to put a WIFI extender by the side patio to allow uninterrupted signal, it can be spotty at times.
Our stay at the Sylvan Keep cabin was superb. From the booking all the way to checking out. Scott and Heather are great hosts. Highly responsive. The pictures in Vrbo are accurate. This is a really nice cabin. Spacious but still quite cozy. Everything worked just fine and the house was spotless clean. The kitchen is well-stocked. All that you need to cook any meal, not to mention an amazing selection of spices. We were a family of five, aging from 17 to 55 and had a great time. It was just perfect for the time of the year (Christmas plus New year). We are definitely coming back and highly recommend it.
Sylvan Keep is our "home away from home" that we have visited for the past three years (and plan to continue coming to each year)! We love the peace and quiet that this little piece of heaven brings, as well as much-needed relaxation to unplug from work and the "real world.” Sylvan Keep is within driving distance of some of our favorite places, such as Douthat State Park, Augusta Springs Wetlands Park, Dan Ingalls Overlook, Goshen Pass Natural Area Preserve, and Cestari Sheep & Wool Company. We have enjoyed the hiking trails on the property and on the adjacent national forest land, and the wrap-around porch is perfect for looking at the starry night sky.
Scott and Heather are wonderful hosts and have provided most anything you would want on vacation – a pantry with staple food items, well-stocked dishes/pots and pans/cooking utensils, extra personal items in case you forget yours, and metal roasting sticks for hot dogs or s’mores over the outdoor fire pit. You can tell that they really take pride in providing an excellent experience for their guests to experience the beauty of Bath County and the surrounding areas.
Host was excellent. Kept us updated on the road conditions as we had winter weather before our stay and this house is off the mainroad. House had everything we needed. Everything was clean and well kept. One of the best places we have stayed in a while. If you are looking for a place to stay that is quiet, peaceful and off the main path this is the place for you. We highly recommend and will be returning in the fall.
Wow! This house is beautiful, cozy, comfortable and very well-equipped. Comfortable beds, lots of space to sodas out and relax. Beautiful land with interesting hiking on the property (see mystery “zipper tree” photo below!) Lots of great DVDs and interesting books/puzzles/games. Kitchen has lots of spices and every cooking/baking thing we needed. We are already planning our next trip to Sylvan’s Keep! Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful cabin with us.
This place is a gem! Comfortable, spacious, welcoming, spotlessly clean and set in a beautiful, super quiet location in the middle of the woods. Heather and Scott were wonderful hosts, answering all our questions and more. We loved it.
