About this property
The Kirtland Cutter Rock House - Metaline Falls
Stay in a piece of history - the Rock House of Metaline Falls was built by renowned architect Kirtland Cutter in 1910 and is one of the most unique homes on the National Register of Historic Places. The Rock House sits on a scenic bend of the Pend Oreille River just outside the town center of Metaline Falls, an outdoor recreation paradise and hotspot of regional architecture that hosts six buildings on the National Register.
The Rock House was designed by Cutter to be a unique blend of Romantic architecture and the Arts and Crafts movement. The interior of the Rock House was built to combine welcoming grand spaces with the comforts of a idyllic cottage - creating a home that was both spacious and intimate.
The Rock House and its grounds have been lovingly maintained for over 100 years by the residents of Metaline Falls - the home features original fixtures, floors and windows just as Cutter designed and built them. The Rock House kitchen and bathroom were restored by local craftsman in 2021 and 2022 to their original style while integrating modern conveniences and appliances for daily use.
The Rock House main level consists of a great room, conservatory, kitchen and dining room. The upper level has 3 bedrooms, a sitting room, and a bathroom. The home has been furnished to reflect the historical design elements and maximize guest comfort.
Air conditioning was added to the Rock House in 2022 to help protect the home from heat damage in the high summer - the bedrooms and the kitchen have individual temperature controls for guest comfort.
Guests have exclusive access to the Rock House and may explore the grounds of the estate. The Carriage House built by Cutter on the estate is also available for rent and may be occupied by us or other guests during your stayThe Rock House is just a few minutes walk from the historic town center of Metaline Falls; restaurants, a grocer, city park, and other Cutter buildings are within 5 minutes from the front door.
Cutter designed the Rock House to reflect the distinctive natural beauty of the Pend Oreille River and Metaline Falls area. We hope that our guests will take every opportunity to explore the town and participate in its ongoing renewal.
The Rock House is a waterfront property, sited just above a steep cliff down to the Pend Oreille River. Guests are advised to access the river and views of the river rapids and falls from a bridge just off the Rock House property for safety.
For guests interested in outdoor activities, the area around the Rock House features some of Washington State's best fly fishing, kayaking, and hiking. Boating is possible on several mountain lakes, with the closest launch only 5 minutes from the Rock House. We are happy to assist guests in plans to explore the natural wonders of the Metaline Falls area and can arrange onsite parking for RVs and boats on request.
Due to the fact that some Rock House historical fixtures cannot be repaired or replaced, we regret that we cannot accommodate pets at the Rock House. We may be able to assist with boarding options in the area for pets while guests stay with us.

This home is incredible. I cannot put into words how wonderful our stay was. I got married and our wedding parties stayed here. The house truly has everything you need, and was the perfect spot to get ready before our big day. The host was responsive to any issues we had and the home was very clean. I highly recommend staying here.
We had a beautiful time in this home, it is elegant and interesting and comfortable and unique! The location was great and we enjoyed checking out the (small) town and businesses! Our host was very friendly and went out of his way to treat us generously.
Bask in the details of a historic home and artful renovation
Our stay at the Rock House was full of relaxation and taking in the beauty of the architecture, details, and exploring the area. Walking distance to so many nice stops in metaline falls, including the cutter theater. The theater building houses a library that was a great place to bring our children and learn more about the first owner of the home.
The Rock House is beautiful, and so comfy. There were 8 of us, and everyone had a great time. The patio was nice to relax on and enjoy the scenery. Plenty of space inside to spend time together cooking, playing games and just hang out. Amenities are wonderful, and updates throughout the house made it a very comfortable stay. Owner Jeff, and hosts, Terry and Lisa were wonderful and very helpful and accommodating. We would all love to make it back again someday.
first off... really cool place. Awesome kitchen, bedroom and bathroom! Having said that, some of the information in the listing was not 100% accurate, namely...
Waterfront: technically true, but you can't view the water from the house and you can't safely access the water.
Gym: there is no gym.
Arcade/game room: There is no arcade/game room
1.5 bathrooms: there is 1 bathroom
Fireplace: Yes, but you are asked not to use it.
All in all it was a pleasant stay however. Would recommend.
Liked: Cleanliness, amenities, property conditions & facilities, communication
A very nice place to stay at. Very clean with great history. Just keep in mind, four bedrooms with only one bathroom. Other than that we thoroughly enjoy our stay.
House was great nicely restored and had an amazing kitchen and bathroom. Quiet nice town and suited our vacation needs. Would definitely recommend this to my friends.
This was a nostalgic visit for me. My grandparents lived in Metaline Falls and a girl my age lived in the Rock House, a house I thought very beatiful. As I still do. It was a joy to stay there.
The home is beautiful, and historically preserved yet in a very modern style. The home has a homey and comfortable feeling.
The beds, very comfortable and the linens were lovely,
The location of the home was perfect.
What a beautiful town and very quaint and welcoming. I would recommend this home for weddings, family get together’s, and the like.
The host was very lovely.
They have done some really nice upgrades and restoration to the property- it still needs some work but we did enjoy our stay. I knew it only had one bathroom but figured the uniqueness of the property would make it worth it- not sure that happened. One bathroom is just not enough for 6 people.
We absolutely loved the charm and history of the Rock House. Stunning architecture from 1910 with modern conveniences that didn’t take away from the natural beauty. They do a great job of leaving notes regarding some of the unique designs and pieces of historical significance. Beds were comfy, the toilet was pretty high-tech, and the kitchen made staying in to eat home cooked meals a breeze. We will definitely be coming back for another quick vacation soon.
Our 5 day stay at the Rock House was amazing! What a gorgeous property! Terry was so easy to communicate with and very generous with his time. What a perfect way to spend our 30th wedding anniversary with our teenage boys. They loved playing the piano and learning about the history of the house and the town. We look forward to checking out one of their other properties in the future.
QUALITY OF PROPERTY EXCELLENT, FAR ABOVE WHAT IS EXPECTED IN THIS AREA. INTERIOR IS VERY WELL APPOINTED TO A LEVEL WHERE YOUNG CHILDREN SHOULD BE LEFT AT HOME. KITCHEN, BATH, AND AIR CONDITIONING CONTROLS ARE DESIGNED FOR THOSE WITH A TECHNICAL EXPERTISE.
The house is amazing, and staying in a piece of history of a unique experience. The area is absolutely stunning, and was fantastic for outdoor adventures. The area also has other Cutter buildings and more history. The townspeople we met were very warm and welcoming. The house has comfortable beds and furnishings with plenty of room to gather or spread out. The kitchen was well stocked, and there are options for outdoor cooking and dining.Only one bathroom was difficult with 3 people, something to keep in mind. Stating that the property is riverfront is a stretch. The river is near by, but not visible from the house. The hosts are great, respond quickly, and are pleasant to work with.
The house is amazing and a perfect base to launch your outdoor adventures from. Terry and Lisa were great and the neighbors are all fun and super nice. Terry took us out on the pontoon and our boys tried their hand at fishing. No luck but they got to drive the boat! Rachel, next door neighbor, is a chef and caters meals to the home. We had an excellent dinner to cap off our week and our last night. We'll definitely be coming back.
