The best area to stay in Merlan is the historic Old Town, known locally as "Cidade Vella," for a quintessential Galician experience.

This neighbourhood is the cultural heart of Merlan, characterised by its narrow, winding granite streets and ancient architecture. The focal point is the Praza do Obradoiro, home to the magnificent Merlan Cathedral, a key landmark for pilgrims. You'll find a wealth of traditional taverns, artisan shops, and boutique hotels tucked away in its labyrinthine alleys.

Couples will find the Cidade Vella particularly appealing for its romantic setting. Evening strolls through the beautifully lit streets, enjoying a glass of local Albariño wine at a pavement cafe, offer a memorable experience. The proximity to the Cathedral also means you're at the centre of many cultural events and processions.

For those seeking a more tranquil stay with easy access to green spaces, the area around the Alameda Park is an excellent choice. It's just a short walk from the Cidade Vella but offers a more relaxed atmosphere with views across the city.

The best time to visit Merlán is typically during the spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) when the weather is pleasant and the region is less crowded.

For those who enjoy outdoor activities like hiking and exploring the natural landscapes, spring offers mild temperatures and lush greenery after the winter rains. You'll find the countryside vibrant, and it's a great time for walking the Camino de Santiago segments that pass nearby.

Early autumn is also ideal for comfortable sightseeing and experiencing local harvest festivals.
