Kiwi Bach by the Beach

If beach holiday fits your lifestyle then this is the place for you. A comfortable but classic Kiwi bach for your family or friends to enjoy New Zealand’s special wild coastal charm. You can be active diving for paua or crayfish, or relax on the beach while you wait for a fish to hook up. The Mataikona coast is full of opportunities for those who simply enjoy walking and fossicking. Suitable for all year round, you can sit in the sun and watch the hypnotic surf from the deck with a nice, refreshing drink or stay inside playing darts and keeping warm by the woodburner. Head down the road to the golf course, or visit the spectacular cliffs and views at Castlepoint.

Please note the bach is on tank water so conserving water is appreciated.

Coastal conditions to be aware of:

In strong onshore winds, sand can drift onto the access road at Sandy Bay. The road is usually cleared promptly, but short delays are possible.
Power cuts can occur from time to time in severe weather. Our water runs on an electric pump, so taps won’t run during an outage.

We provide a BBQ for cooking, torches and candles and the wood burner for heating.

If you’re arriving during a strong wind forecast, consider travelling in daylight and checking local updates.

Remove personal items, remove leftover food and drinks and take out the rubbish
Turn off the lights, lock the doors and return the keys
On arrival turn on the main power switch (meter outside back door). Take away your rubbish. There is no rubbish collection. Water is from a rainwater tank so please be mindful about water usage.
Wood for the wood burner is down the side of the house in the wood shed (not under the tree out the back, this isn't dry yet).Please only use driftwood from the beach on the outdoor pizza oven.
Please leave the bach as you wish to find it. Turn off the main power. Do not leave any food or drink etc. in the fridge or freezer. Lock up when you leave (ranch slider, back door, gate).
Failure to complete these may result in a negative review from the host.

Beach seaside bach

Typical seaside Bach, overlooking mataikona bay and river, tidy house with plenty of space, logburner warmed the house nicely on our 1st night. Awesome location, happily stay again. All coms and key pickup drop off were easy as. Overall a great experience

A perfect mini break

It was our first time turning left of the main road to Castlepoint and we are so glad we did. To discover this stretch of coast was magical and our bach with the perfect view was the neatest spot to stay.The view from bed while drinking coffee in the morning was the perfect recharge plug in! I hope we can return sometime!

Place had amazing views and we enjoyed our stay. However the yard was overgrown compared to the pictures and there was unfortunately a dead rat next to the front door.

Perfect getaway by the sea

Great day, perfect for a weekend getaway, the bedroom overlooks the beach and is so comfortable, it's hard to get out! Enjoyed looking at the book collection, lots of interesting reads in there!

Nice secluded bach by the beach

We had a lovely stay, and enjoyed several walks on the beach just over the road. Felt like we were staying in a family bach. Beds were clean and comfortable and we particularly enjoyed the view of the sea from the master bedroom. Guests may wish to note that the stairs are quite steep, they were tricky but manageable for the toddler and grandparents in our party.

Excellent amazing location, typical kiwi batch, had everything we needed, our Mum is in the last months of her life, we asked her what she wanted, all she wanted is to sit by the sea, so she took her walker down to the beach, and sat there, it was the perfect location, cell coverage was amazing, we were able to stream the rugby for Mum, highly recommend this place just on location, loved it, thank you

Great get away

Loved the sound of the ocean and the view from the master bedroom. Rustic and authentic west coast batch with everything you needed including an array of board games. Loved every minute of it... just what the family needed

Cute Bach with great view

cute little A-frame with a great view of the beach. The beach itself was pretty wild, and the sea had lots of big logs floating in it, so we opted to drive to Castle Point Beach, only 5 minute's drive away, for our swimming. Bach had everything you need, but the outdoor pizza oven needs a little tlc to be usable, Definitely a great spot for a weekend away from it all.

Perfect kiwi Bach

I stayed at this wonderful, classic kiwi Bach with my family. We loved the proximity to the beach, the well stocked kitchen (sharp knives!!) And the comfy beds. The master bed is raised so you can lie in bed and watch the sunrise. I would love to come back for another holiday. Thanks for having us!

Awesome kiwi holiday

We had a lovely time and felt like we really got away from it all! The views of the beach from the house were fantastic, and the rugged weather meant fab big waves to watch and lots of cozy card games inside. Really recommend this cool holiday choice. The booking process was easy and we felt looked after, and the venue was just what we expected. Our only issue was our low car struggled on the unsealed road coming into Mataikona and there had been some recent rockfall that sadly has damaged the bottom of our car. Something to be mindful of if you have a low vehicle.

hidden gem

This was an excellent place for a school holiday getaway with primary school aged children. The setting is amazing, and we had the bay to ourselves. We enjoyed beachcombing, making sandcastles and forts out of driftwood, rockpooling and walking along the sand. The house has everything you need (make sure to bring enough groceries though), and is cosy with a wood burner + heaters, with loads of books and games. The A-frame is cute and we enjoyed toasting marshmallows over the outside fireplace. Would recommend to anyone.
