This lovely town with a wonderfully preserved stave church sits in a dream location next to the staggeringly beautiful Jotunheimen National Park.

The town of Lom is best known for its ancient stave church, as well as for the gorgeous landscapes that have made the surrounding area so popular with outdoorsy visitors. Hikers, bikers and wintersports enthusiasts find the town an ideal base for their activities, as Low is set amid splendid mountains and is well served by trails. Make sure you spend some time exploring the unusual museums in the little town itself, too.

Begin your visit to Lom by seeing its most famous landmark, Lom Stavkyrkje (Lom Stave Church). It is still in use as a place of worship, but its oldest parts date back to 1160. Take a guided tour to learn all about its architecture and history.

Another attraction close to the town centre is the Lom Bygdamuseum (Lom Rural Museum), an open-air attraction with buildings constructed as early as 1613. Come here to gain insight into the unique culture and traditions found in the area. Or, head to the nearby Fossheim Steinsenter (Fossheim Stone Centre) to learn about the area’s geology and pick up beautiful jewellery made from local stones.

Get an overview of the natural surroundings at the Norsk Fjellsenter (Norwegian Mountain Centre), an informative museum of mountaineering. When you have finished viewing its exhibits, prepare to head out and see the real thing. Make your way to the mountainous terrain of Jotunheimen National Park. This is the place to hike the popular Besseggen trail. Bring your camera and take plenty of pictures of the striking green Gjendevannet lake, and the nearby blue Bessvatnet lake.

In winter, take advantage of the many wintersports on offer in the mountainous landscapes around Lom. Consider snowshoeing, sledding or skiing.

From Oslo, you can get to Lom by taking the train to Lillehammer and then changing. However, many people prefer to drive the journey is more than 5 hours. Make sure you take the eastern route, which leads along the banks of the picturesque Mjøsa lake.
