Experience some of Croatia’s famous coastal appeal when you explore this region’s islands, secluded coves and a grand port city sheltered by forested highlands.

With its mountainous setting and spectacular coastline, it’s easy to see why Kvarner has been a popular getaway spot for centuries. The Kvarner Gulf has varied shores of sweeping beaches, rocky headlands, secret coves and picturesque islands. Explore lively port cities and quaint coastal towns scattered with superb Habsburg-era architecture. Hop between islands in search of the perfect Adriatic beach. Inland, sprawling national parks protect wildlife and verdant highlands.

Rijeka is the city at the centre of it all. Spend some time getting attuned to its energy and rich cultural heritage. Check out landmarks such as the hilltop Trsat Castle and follow the medieval pilgrimage route to Our Lady of Trsat Church. Rijeka’s busy port is the perfect place to begin your journey to the gulf’s gorgeous islands. You can also use the nearby island of Krk as a steppingstone by driving along its connecting bridge. Explore the island’s historic fishing villages, Krk’s old town and its magnificent sandy beach, Baška.

Catch a ferry to Lošinj, Rab or Cres to experience these Adriatic islands’ relaxed and rustic atmosphere. Don’t be fooled by how rugged and inhospitable these islands may appear from the mainland the islands’ western edges are sheltered from the “bura” wind and are lush and forested. The islands are dotted with heritage towns, each with a tangle of twisting alleys and pretty villas. Check out Lošinj’s marine sanctuary to spot Adriatic dolphins and turtles.

Find out about Kvarner’s past as a playground for wealthy holiday makers from the Austro-Hungarian Empire when you explore the villas of OpatijaOpens in a new window and Lovran. In these places you will see grand Habsburg mansions. Croatia’s long history as a tourist destination is showcased at the Croatian Museum of Tourism in Opatija.
