  • During World War 2, the Japanese used Allied prisoners of war to build a railway from Thailand to Burma so they could supply their army without the dangers of sending supplies by sea. Many prisoners died under appalling conditions during its construction, and the line became known as the 'Death Railway'. It was immortalised in David Lean's 1957 film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' which centres around one of the line's main engineering feats, the bridge across the Kwae Yai river just north of Kanchanaburi. Although the film was shot in Sri Lanka, the Bridge on the River Kwai really exists, and still carries regular passenger trains from Bangkok as far as Nam Tok. For anyone interested in 20th century history, a visit to Kanchanaburi and the infamous Death Railway is a must. This page gives all the necessary information for train travel from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, the Bridge on the River Kwai & Nam Tok, along with an overview of what there is to see in the area, including the Bridge Over the River Kwai, the Wampo (Wang Po) Viaduct and the museum at Hellfire Pass (Konyu Cutting). You can see the Bridge on the River Kwai as a day trip from Bangkok using the morning train out and afternoon train back, but it's better to make it a 2 or 3 day trip as there's a lot more to see than just the Bridge. For example, you could take the morning passenger train from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi on day 1, stay a night or two in Kanchanaburi, then take the afternoon train back on day 2 or 3, so you can visit Hellfire Pass (less well known than the Bridge, but not be missed) and travel the Death Railway through fantastic scenery over the dramatic Wampo Viaduct as far as its current terminus at Nam Tok.

Vertrokken na een nacht

Naar mijn mening heeft dit resort waarschijnlijk flinke gevolgen ondervonden van de Corona-uitbraak, wat mogelijk het onderhoud heeft verwaarloosd. Hoewel het idee achter het resort aantrekkelijk is, is de huidige staat ervan niet in lijn met de kamerprijs van €100. Onze ervaring als enige gasten was interessant, maar de afgelegen ligging zorgde voor extra kosten bij het ophalen door taxi/Uber-chauffeurs. Wij hebben na één nacht besloten naar een hotel in de stad te gaan. Mijn advies is om ook een hotel in Kanchanaburi stad te overwegen, zodat je dichter bij alle voorzieningen bent.

Vakantiekamp voor kinderen

Het was niet de droompark die wij voor ogen hadden. Wellicht in het hoogseizoen heel leuk voor kinderen met al die waterspelen maar onze volwassen reisgroep, de enige gasten nog aanwezig, had er echt niets te zoeken. Nu bleven we maar 1 nacht. Maar weet dat ook de accommodatie is ingericht voor die doelgroep. Heel simpel dus. Wel schoon. Bedden helaas verschrikkelijk.

おすすめできない理由 ・ 隣のレストランのカラオケが23時過ぎまで大音量 ・ ミニバーのポテトチップスの袋が蟻に突破されている ・ ソファーに大きめの蟻（十数匹） ・ コーヒーカップにうっすらと埃 ・ トイレットペーパーが使い切った状態で、部屋内に予備無し ・ 朝食（ビュッフェ）品数少ない、コーヒーは煮詰まっていてとても飲めない ・ 朝食（アメリカンブレックファースト） 一人はコーヒー（ビュッフェのよりまとも）一人はかなりうすいココアだった ・ 英語が話せるスタッフが少ない ベッドは中に防汚シートが敷いてあるのか多少ごわごわしてたけど特に問題はなかった。ダニなどはいなかったのでカラオケの音さえなければまぁまぁ快適だった。 一戸建てなので、うるさい子連れでも気が楽だし、川沿いで雰囲気も悪くないだけに残念。 スタッフ（やる気なし）を総取替しないと厳しいと思う。 でも、こどもにはそんなことは関係なく楽しそうだった。
