Skyville Zen Resort, Kundasang

10/10 Excellent

"Staying up in the mountains, you have to accept that you will have insect visitors come in your room. The host gave us a spray to help the insects leave. The host kept our room clean and gave fresh towels. They helped us build our itinerary. I had to have some milk and food for my young kids and they let me use their fridge. Dog was friendly."

Sutera Sanctuary Lodges at Kinabalu Park

10/10 Excellent

"Friendly staff and the suite was great. You're located directly inside the Kinabalu National Park in Kundasang. We were specifically in one of the Nepenthes Suites which I can say was very nice (one of the King Bed suites). It was roomie, included full bathroom with a shower and hot water, a mini fridge, a sink with a facet for drinkable water, a smart tv (not huge), and a fire place. Entry into the park was 50 ringgit for foreigners, and 10 ringgit for locals. This is a per person/ per entry fee unless you're staying inside the park like we were, in which case the fee lasts 3 days. *If you're staying in the park you can leave the park and come back during these 3 days and you should be able to just show the person at the gate your initial ticket - we did have some confusion where the person at the gate thought we had to pay again, but the people at the front desk were able to confirm the tickets are good for 3 days and they got our second payment returned to us. Our stay also included a breakfast service each morning from the restaurant in the park which was nice (a very short walk from our suite), and they also offered room service from the same restaurant. Room service obviously wasn't included, but there wasn't a service fee or anything apart from the cost of the meals which was also nice coming from the US. Over all my wife and I really enjoyed the stay and I felt it was great value."

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Kampung Kituntul?

The best area to stay in Kampung Kituntul is the area immediately surrounding the Kituntul Nature Retreat.

This is the primary area for visitors, as it offers direct access to the retreat's facilities and activities. You'll find a selection of accommodation options here, from individual chalets to more expansive villas, all designed to blend with the natural surroundings. The retreat is located within lush rainforest, offering a peaceful setting.

Couples looking for a romantic getaway will find this area particularly appealing. The seclusion and natural beauty provide a superb backdrop for relaxation, with opportunities for guided nature walks and enjoying the tranquil environment together. Many accommodations offer private balconies with forest views.

Families will also appreciate staying within the retreat's vicinity. The organised activities, such as jungle trekking and birdwatching tours, cater to various age groups, and the dedicated staff can help arrange family-friendly excursions.

When is the best time to go to Kampung Kituntul?

The best time to visit Kampung Kituntul is during the dry season, which runs from March to October.

During these months, you'll experience consistently sunny weather and lower humidity, making it ideal for outdoor activities like exploring the surrounding rainforests, trekking to waterfalls, and enjoying the local wildlife. The seas are also calmer, which is superb for water-based excursions such as snorkelling, diving, or island hopping to nearby Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park.

For travellers interested in cultural experiences, visiting during the dry season also aligns with some local festivals and harvest celebrations, offering a chance to engage with the community and learn about their traditions. The pleasant weather ensures a comfortable and enjoyable experience for these events.

While November to February is the monsoon season, it can still be a good time to visit if you don't mind occasional heavy rain showers. The landscape is particularly lush during this period, and you might find fewer tourists, leading to a more tranquil experience.
