"A beautiful place nestled in the mountains, set in a charming, beautifully restored village. Its location is also ideal, roughly halfway between Elafonissi Beach and the Balos Lagoon, making it a great base for exploring both. The restaurant was another highlight, serving truly outstanding dishes. A wonderful experience overall."

"One of the best family and regional small hotel we have visited in 20 years in Crete. They really are very small hotel, familial style but they do their best to provide high level services: multiple pool, breakfast, sun towels. Amazing quality for price. I rarely write reviews but their work needs to be recognized. The only con of this hotel, despite what is written on Hotels.com, it's very remote in the moutain and far from Paleochora, so I recommend if you need to rest 2-3 days in a super...

"When booked the hotel was described as a “resort” which is why we planned the detour to its location. Upon arrival there was no staff to welcome us - a text to the number on the locked door was quickly returned with a lock box code to grant us enterance to our studio apartment. The advertised laundry facilities were not available for use, the swimming pool while open was in great need of maintenance or filtering ( both) and as such was not an attractive option for the afternoon. The restaurant...

Euphoria Resort - All Inclusive

10/10 Excellent

"Fantastic family time and very well located to travel around the west. The staff was fantastic"

Myrion Beach Resort & Spa - Adults Only

10/10 Excellent

"Really enjoyed my stay. The room was lovely and I made use of the indoor gym which was small but well kitted out. The breakfast selection was good including dairy free options. I also had buffet dinner in the main dining room which was good but as I don’t eat meat, I think it lacked options with veg or fish."

Iolida Beach by Smile Hotels

8/10 Good

"Our room was clean and spacious with a great view to the water. Our room was cleaned every day and there was plenty of parking available. Not sure what it looks like during the busy season though. The pool was nice but the water was cold. The pool is definitely not heated! Staff was friendly. We booked all inclusive. The food was ok but not exceptional. The drink options were also limited and the knock off Coke or Pepsi products did not taste good at all. But all in all we had a good time and a nice stay!"

Atlantica Amalthia Beach Hotel – Adults only

10/10 Excellent

"This was our second visit to Atlantica Amalthia. Very nice hotel. Everywhere was very clean, our room was a good size (we had a room in the building on the beach side) with nice balcony. Nice bar and restaurant. Breakfast room was nice and good choice of food. Very well kept beach. All of the staff were first class. So friendly, polite and extremely helpful. Visited the spa and had two massages during my stay and both were very nice and relaxing. Definitely recommend. Reasonable price. Didn't use the pool as it got busy very quickly. Sunbeds were very close together and not positioned well that you could get the sun all day. Whilst I enjoy swimming in a pool, we chose to stay on the beach each day. Good location with plenty of restaurants nearby. Recommend Sebastien next door. Absolute gem of a hotel and would definitely recommend it."

Erato Beach Hotel Adults Only

10/10 Excellent

"We had an amazing stay at Erato. The flat was in good condition and clean! All the employees were kind and helpful. We had cleaning service everyday. The hotel is located just in front of the beach. Perfect location. The pool area is amazing as well. We also had a parking spot. Everything was perfect and we couldn't expect anything better. Give a 10/10 for the amenities and staff as well. Will come back definitely!"

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Kalivianí?

The best area to stay in Kalivianí for a relaxing Cretan escape is within the village itself, particularly around the central square.

Kalivianí is a small, traditional Cretan village known for its authentic feel and stunning views of Kissamos Bay and the surrounding olive groves. The village is compact, with a few tavernas and a mini-market clustered around the main square. Its elevated position offers picturesque vistas, and it's a great base for exploring the wild beauty of Western Crete.

Couples looking for a tranquil retreat will find Kalivianí ideal. The village offers a peaceful setting away from the busier tourist hubs. You can enjoy leisurely meals at local tavernas, take strolls through the village's narrow streets, and simply relax by a pool with a view. It's also a convenient starting point for day trips to famous beaches like Balos Lagoon and Falassarna, as well as the Rodopou Peninsula.

For those wanting a bit more convenience with direct beach access, staying slightly outside the village, closer to the coastline towards Kissamos, might be preferable. While not strictly Kalivianí, this area offers a few hotels and villas with easy access to the sea and a wider range of amenities in nearby Kissamos town, which is just a short drive away.

When is the best time to go to Kalivianí?

The best time to go to Kalivianí is during the shoulder seasons of May, early June, September, and early October.

These months offer pleasant weather, with warm temperatures superb for exploring the outdoors without the intense heat of mid-summer. You'll find the sea warm enough for swimming and the hiking trails more comfortable. It's also a time when the island is less crowded than the peak summer months, allowing for a more relaxed and authentic experience.

Couples looking for a romantic getaway will appreciate the quieter beaches and tavernas, making it easier to find a secluded spot to enjoy the sunset or a candlelit dinner. The mild evenings are ideal for strolling through the village or along the coast.

For families with younger children, these months are particularly good as the temperatures are more manageable for little ones, and the main attractions are less busy.
