"It is isolated. So you're not within walking distance to a local shop or restaurant. Fortunately, the staff cook a great local meal. Anything you request, they'll prepare it. Cold drinks are also available although a touch expensive. Power going off is a constant battle, but a solar generator makes life pleasant indeed. They don't help organize trips so you're left to yourself to explore the local area, which is tricky in the wet season when we were there. Beautiful, peaceful, clean, and great...

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Janjanbureh?
The best area to stay in Janjanbureh is within the main town itself, particularly near the riverfront.

This area is the heart of Janjanbureh, offering the most convenient access to local life and historical sites. You'll find traditional guesthouses and a few small lodges located amongst the local homes and markets. The main street, which runs parallel to the Gambia River, is where most of the town's activity takes place. It's a compact area, making it very walkable.

For travellers interested in cultural immersion and local history, staying in Janjanbureh town is ideal. You're just a short walk from the ferry crossing to McCarthy Island, the Wassu Stone Circles (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the local market. Many guesthouses can also arrange river trips for wildlife spotting.

For those seeking a more secluded and quiet experience, there are a few options just outside the main town, often with views of the river or surrounding nature.
When is the best time to go to Janjanbureh?
The best time to visit Janjanbureh is during the dry season, which runs from November to May.

During these months, you'll experience consistently sunny days and lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the island and its surroundings. The river levels are also generally lower, which can make boat trips and spotting wildlife along the Gambia River more comfortable and productive.

This period is great for couples looking for a relaxing holiday with pleasant weather for outdoor activities like birdwatching or visiting the Wassu Stone Circles. The cooler, drier air makes walking around the historic town and enjoying the river views much more enjoyable.

For solo travellers interested in cultural experiences and wildlife, the dry season offers the most comfortable conditions for excursions.
