Hood Canal 2 B/R Waterfront Cabin. Sleeps 4.
Welcome to Shep's Castle, your perfect vacation cabin on Hood Canal! PLEASE NOTE: Even though I have 2 and 3 night minimum stays, if you see an open night on the calendar between bookings, please contact me for a reservation. Enjoy the sunset while relaxing on the deck of this RUSTIC and charming, 1930's cabin. Only part of the cabin has been updated so it retains much of its old rustic and funky charm. What a perfect ending to a day of swimming, diving, fishing or just hanging around on a lovely, private cove populated by a few lovely cabins. This two bedroom cabin is perfect for a small family or just a couple wanting to enjoy the solitude of our lovely home. The master has a queen bed and beautiful maple floors and a gorgeous cedar cathedral ceiling. The 2nd bedroom has a double bed and there is a foldout futon in the living room. It is an open floor plan, perfect for a romantic getaway or small family. My cabin is just 60 steps from the water, over a nice grassy lawn and over a rockery that is owned by the county. One night & Two night rates are available, please inquire :) Dogs under 25# are allowed, there is a $195 pet fee Please note: due to the size of the accomodations, Shep's Castle may not accommodate all sizes of guests. It is not tiny by any means, but a cozy little cabin. It has been brought to my attention that the approx 3' by 3' shower is too small for some of the larger guests who have stayed. Also, Shep's Castle is located on the edge of the Olympic Rainforest and on the water. There is wildlife and there are bugs. ALSO I have owned Shep's Castle for over 25 years. there is an incredibly stubborn plant that grows from underneath the kitchen cabinets. I have even removed the cabinets to try to get rid of these plant more than once. I have pulled, poisoned and swore at this plant. He is now named Georg also he's a permanent resident for better or worse. We are located just minutes away from Hoodsport, just one cove North of the famous dive spot, Octopus Hole. And just a short drive from Mason Lake and the Olympic National Park. PLEASE NOTE: There are outdoor cameras and a Ring Doorbell which are monitored 24/7 for security reasons.

A cozy cabin with plenty of room for 2 - a short (steep!) walk to the beach, and right next to a cute little town. We loved every minute here, and would come back to relax again.
This was our 3rd stay at Sheps and can't recommend it enough. This was the first time visiting at the tail end of summer and we made good use of the propane BBQ and firepit. Fantastic view and well insulated, cozy space.
About an hour or two drive to anything you want to see or do. Beautiful views. Nothing fancy, but a great cozy place to return to after a day of exploring. Main bedroom is very nice.
This was a beautiful location, and the listing was as described. All the essentials were available, including wifi, smart TV, outdoor seating, and a grill. The neighbors were quiet, and the views were unmatched. Thank you!!
Everything was as expected and more! There was two days of shrimp fishing and a fisherman who had spoken to us brought us a huge bag of 5-7” shrimp for our enjoyment. We watched two orcas playing for hours from the front porch picnic table while having morning coffee! There were several outlets nearby to the Olympic Park and we saw a herd of Roosevelt Elk at the Jefferson wildlife reserve. Most of all, our hosts kindness and respect plus the cute touches in the cabin really eclipsed the natural wonders we were fortunate enough to witness!

Not for mobility challenged
Great location!
Maintenance needed, plants growing through foundation into house are a clue.
Hard for mobility challenged with steps up to bedroom, bathroom down. A bedroom down with a small bed.
Bring kindling if you want a fire in ancient free-standing fireplace. Can gather from outside, lots of sticks.
Shower not for big folks.
Sorry about negativity, we had a great weekend but will find a different place next time.
Oh, and the mouse…
For our vaca we planned on being gone most of the time. All we needed was a place to make a meal or two, shower, and sleep. This cabin had exactly all of that! This place had it's own quirky flair. If you are looking for luxurious amenities this place is NOT it, but if you are looking for an affordable place to have the basics and beable to have a great water front view! This is it! It's a great place for the price. I would stay again.
My wife and I got away for a long weekend after being kid-free. We brought kayaks and wanted to explore the area. We enjoyed the location very much, with easy access to Hoodsport and Hama Hama. The access to the water wasn't as easy as we hoped, but the fact that there's a little county park in front of the house did work out for us. The neighbors seem very protective of the beach though, so that's weird. Luckily the smoke from the Bear Gulch fire didn't come down low enough to bother us either, but it kept us from hikes up in that area. The house is cute and comfortable with that old cabin charm. There were some plants growing up under the kitchen cabinets, and the landscaping is a bit overgrown, but no bother.

It's a quaint little cabin from yesteryear. It was fine for the limited use we needed but glad we didn't stay any longer just because it's worn out. Kind of like camping indoors😅 It has a newer section that's beautiful but the main cabin is very tired and there is some spongy flooring in the living room that's carpeted over. There is a moldy and wood smoke smell that was noticeable but didn't bather us much with open windows. The beach is rocky and a short steep dirt path takes you there. The view is nice. Beds were comfortable, kitchen well equipped. 3 of us had plenty of towels but only 1 washcloth. The owner was very responsive and pleasant.
This is a nice place for duo or close group of four. Bedrooms are open concept. The master bedroom is the highlight. Nice setting with beautiful views. The kitchen was stocked with what we needed and host was communicative.

It’s all about being on the water to me. Perfect location for a traditional PNW vacation. Bring your oyster worthy beach/water shoes. The master has been updated beautifully while the rest of the cabin is dated but clean.
Couldn’t stay. Had to find an other place to stay. Looks abandoned with broken window in garage door and totally overgrown with blackberries. Moldy smell and acrid odor so bad we couldn’t stay in the house for more than a few minutes without our eyes burning. Moisture stains on ceiling. Floor slopes dramatically and vines growing into the house from under the sink. Owner says it is fine, how it always is and refuses any discount or refund.
I couldn’t stop thinking about if these walls could talk. Its a really good thing. I feel this is one of the original cabins for settling in the hood canal. It was very cool to sit out front and watch nature. And oh yes! We did see a pod of Orcas. That was very cool. Fun stay for my wife and I, a small cozy house.
This place totally delivers on views and access to the water, and the storied, rustic nature of the cabin is very appealing. However, the cabin could use some TLC. There were lots of large (thumbnail-length) dead ants on the living room carpet and a few live ones in the bedroom, as well as a couple active spider webs in the corners, including one with egg sacs. When we arrived we had to immediately open all windows and doors to get airflow, as there was a strong mildew smell. The railing on the upper porch is clearly in need of replacement, and it was a little nerve-wracking with small children to be up there. Also, the patio chairs and living room carpet have definitely seen better days. The DVD player didn't work, which was disappointing because there is a very impressive DVD collection. Also, there were missing screens in several windows. For more than 1,000 (including all taxes and fees) for three nights, we would have liked a little more care with these kinds of details. That said, we had a great time, and the bedroom (presumably newly added/renovated) was very clean and comfortable and offered a truly stunning view of the canal. If the cleanliness and structural issues are addressed, we would totally come back, fully prepared to give this place five stars.

Cute but...
I agree with a previous reviewer. This cabin is very rustic, as in plants/vines growing up into the house from below, rustic. I rented this for a get away for my boyfriends birthday and he was not happy. The main reason for the unhappiness is that despite having to pay a cleaning fee, when you get to the cabin you are left with instructions to fully clean the entire cabin, including sweep and vacuuming or you risk losing your deposit. We spent his entire birthday morning cleaning. Really upsetting.
The property was wonderful. The view was peaceful and great, especially from the bedroom. I would book the place again.
One question I have when staying somewhere is: what do I need to bring. For example, there's a grill which is accurately listed in the description. It's a gas grill - quite excellent - so don't bring charcoal.
It's not quite clear on the property rules, but do not cross over the property boundary on the beach. We did so and were served legal papers by the neighbors.
The property has two bedrooms, but the second bedroom has no privacy as it's open to the only bathroom. This wasn't an issue with us since there were only two of us. The second bedroom would be fine for a small child, but not fine for two couples.
Overall, we enjoyed the place and would return.

Not Quite as Advertised
My husband and I stayed at this cabin for five nights on our way to a family event in Washington. After making the reservation, my sister and her son asked if they could join us for one night on their way to the same event. From the website, it appeared the additional charge would be $10 per person per night for a 3 night minimum, or $60 dollars. When I notified the owner, she said the additional cost would be $100. I questioned the rate, and received a defensive and unpleasant message explaining the $100 charge was necessary to cover the additional cost for the 2 guests one night stay. I do not have a problem with the owner charging rates she deems appropriate, but expect published rate information to be accurate. I hope this second and more public complaint results in a correction of the published guest rate information.
Property not safe or clean. Angry, aggressive host.
Weeds growing out of the floor in the kitchen. Ants all over the kitchen. Smoke detector had been covered in foil by previous guests. Linens were dirty. The fireplace is unsafe to use.
I did not notice most of this until after I had stayed one night. My husband and friend were to arrive for the second night, but I found other accommodations for us all. I notified host that I was leaving because of the state of the property, did not ask for a refund, and she accused me of trying to scam her. VRBO customer service rep suggested that they would request partial refund, I did not ask. Host then messaged me to say she would take me to small claims court if I disputed the charge on my credit card.
Terrible experience overall.

Hoodsport Cabin Stay
First, I did send an email to the host or property manager yesterday, May 19th at 6:09 p.m. PDT telling her of our concerns. As of now, 5/21 at noon, PDT I have not had a response from her. When we first arrived we almost turned around and went back home. The exterior of the property is severely neglected with overgrown weeds everywhere. There's a huge tree to the left of the stone path/steps and all of the dead blooms covered the stone area to the point where a first time visitor had difficulty determining where the steps were. Inside was clean and comfortable. We had an emergency with one of our rentals and had to leave the next morning but had that not come up we probably would have left anyway. The tipping point with that decision was when we discovered vegetation growing from under the sink and through the cabinet into the kitchen. This also shows neglect. The property is not as described. There is no beach access like shown in the picture and described in the property description. All of that is now a bulkhead with no beach access.
First of all, the location is lovely and I can see how the property was cozy in its day. The property is somewhat beyond “rustic”, closer to run down with deferred maintenance. We’re used to camping, so don’t expect or need luxury. Where the concerns came in was the mold and mildew in the bathroom where there was a leak under the sink resulting in warped wood and visible mold and mildew as well as a bad odor that permeated the whole cabin. At some point someone knew about the leak because there were a couple of sponges placed under it. The back of the cabin is completely overgrown by ivy and blackberry, to the extent that some was growing in through the bathroom window and up under the kitchen sink. The carpet in the living room felt moist but we couldn’t locate a source so maybe just general water intrusion from beneath. It was difficult to tell if linens were clean because of the mold/mildew smell. It should also be noted that there are no doors to either sleeping area, not a big deal for us as just two people, but not great if you want a little privacy. The second bedroom is the corner of a storage space off the bathroom and its window is also entirely blocked by overgrown vegetation. There were burned out lightbulbs throughout. The beach does not belong to the property, it is a small park. The neighbors watch you like a hawk to make sure you don’t accidentally step over the park boundary-even in the water.

Pros and cons
Pros: shore is in front of house with an abundance of oysters and a beautiful view. House has lots of movies, games and soft sheets. The town is close and meals were great.
Cons: I use rental properties about 5 times a year. This house was a disappointment. First, there was a lot of conflicting information prior to entering the house. Emails state no internet but owner confirmed that was old info. I was emailed a code for the lock box which did not work instead the owner told me to use a different code on a different code box. These conflicts have never happened to me before in any rental. It seems the owner has not updated their info with vrbo. I had to contact the owner again to get the WiFi password. Not sure why it wasn’t on the check in sheet. Not as thoroughly cleaned as we would have hoped especially during covid. We found trash out of the can under the sink and pretzels in the couch. Most concerning were at least 3 separate plants growing their way from outside to inside the house! (Front door and under the kitchen sink) The floors are VERY uneven In living room - sloping and lumps that have been Unsuccessfully hidden by an area rug. Several deck boards were loose as well as a board on the outside table. We tried to eat outside only to discover that the Plastic tablecloth had been put away wet and was moldy. The front door has a cracked window. Overall, this house is not just rustic, it’s neglected. We LOVED Hoodsport and will definitely return but we will rent a different house.
Just stayed two days to see Olympic National Park. Great location right on the water, very calm and relaxing. Host very responsive. As described, had everything we needed.
Drove up the west side of peninsula to Lake Quinault and rain forest. Great one day trip. Beautiful area, had good weather.
