Oceania House is pretty much an expensive form of a youth hostel, but with lower par facilities. It is very expensive for the ‘services’ received. The owner Avril Whyte charges such a premium knowing that this is the only accommodation type bookable on commercial platforms for tourists alike. If we knew prior that home stays with locals can be organised, we would’ve opted for this instead. Avril likes to place add-on charges for instance $5 internet browsing which I questioned after paying $1100 for 4 nights in a mosquito infested, dirty, dusty non-air con room. She further exhibited threatening behaviour and swore at me by taking away a snorkelling trip she organised for us due to the lack of mobile reception she was the intermediate person that leveraged herself to book things on our behalf. Avril constantly bombards guests with colonial history which was to no interest to us along with the behaviours of the Clunies-Ross family. The only positive we saw was that it allowed us to stay on Home Island. As a person that has worked in the hospitality and hotel industry for 15 years, Avril Whyte should not be allowed to operate, hopefully the new owners of the house mid 2021 will be much better hosts without the passive aggressive behaviours we experienced from her. STAY AWAY from this if can.
