The Hynes Cabin- 1925 Renovated Classic with Stunning Views
The Hynes Family Cabin is a once-in-a lifetime experience. Built by our grandparents nearly a century ago, the cabin will transport you and your family back to the beautiful, authentic charms of the Old West, while you enjoy plenty of modern amenities.
The cabin sleeps seven, with three twin beds and two queen beds. Its 40’ wide sleeping porch is unique, and has a truly breathtaking view. Our grandparents chose this location for the most beautiful vista they’d ever seen. At sunset, you’ll see Mt. Elkhorn and Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak) glow pink and gold. An occasional rainbow will dazzle you. Each morning you can watch a herd of horses running from their nearby pasture to the stable.
Children love the Hynes Cabin. Great climbing rocks are all around. Our original ball and claw bathtub is on the porch, filled with pillows and inviting kids to read and snooze. “A Boy’s Life in the Hills,” written by our dad, shares tales of his many adventures. Our guests love to sit on the porch or in our cozy living room and read tales about the West. It’s a place that encourages rest and renewal, with lots of fun things to do close by and a quiet place to come home to at day’s end.
There’s a chest full of fun family games and a DVD player. KOA amenities – trail rides, a water slide, miniature golf, two swimming pools, movie nights and pancake breakfasts – are available. Only the trail rides and pancake breakfasts have a fee. Many nearby trails invite hikers of all skill levels. Iconic Mt. Rushmore and charming Hill City, “the art capital of the Hills,” are both just six miles away. Pristine Sheridan Lake, where the family can swim, fish and hike, is only a 15-minute drive away.
The Hynes cabin is a perfect place for a romantic getaway, too. Its beauty, quiet and privacy will help you relax and refresh. There are two queen beds, one on the porch and one in the living room.
There are so many personal touches that you’ll feel right at home. Our handsome queen headboards were made by a local carpenter, and the four pine chests were built for the cabin in 1925. Frances made all the curtains by hand, just as our grandmother did nearly a century ago. On the porch there’s a display of some of the daily objects she used: her apron, her Vaseline glassware, her Mixmaster and other objects. The coffee table was made from the cabin’s original closet. Newly installed solid wood doors compliment the cabin’s authentic feel. A book of photos tells the history of the Hynes Cabin.
The 40’ wide sleeping porch is just as it was 100 years ago, with our family’s saddles hanging on the rafters. Antique light fixtures from the 1930s adorn the two bathrooms. The newly refurbished kitchen is fully equipped. And for nearly 100 years, guests have been sharing their memories and whimsy on paper plates that are all part of this truly unique experience. We look forward to hosting you in our Hynes Family Cabin. ~ Frances and Arthur Hynes

This was our 2nd time staying here. Even better than the first time! Great way to reconnect and recharge with our family. Beautiful place and the views are amazing!
We loved our time at the cabin- it was nice to have all the amenities of KOA but also be tucked away in the quiet of the cabin. We loved sleeping on the porch, watching the horses run by each evening, and the cabin was very well stocked.
Location is great, its in the back of the KOA so you don't have to hear all the noise but benefit from the accommodations if you want it.
Host was very responsive.
Our family absolutely loved our stay at the Hynes family cabin! The views, wildlife, and cabin amenities made for the perfect escape from reality and an experience we’ll never forget.
The cabin is very cozy with beautiful views. It is perfectly located with easy access to all the sites and activities of the area. I would recommend this cabin for all ages. Get away from the electronics and enjoy old fashion family time.
The cabin was amazing. We had perfect weather for utilizing the sleeping porch with plenty of blankets available for warmth. We love sleeping in a cold room and this was great.
Nice touches of family memorabilia the made you feel at home
We would definitely stay again.
The Cabin was extremely clean! We loved hanging out in the screened in porch. We played cards and ate our meals out there. My boys enjoyed sleeping with the fresh air! The best surprise was there were dozens of horses out to pasture behind the cabin. Absolutely beautiful!
The perfect SD cabin. Nothing will beat the sound and sight of the horses every morning and evening. It’s pretty central to all the sights and hiking. The use of the KOA amenities is a major bonus. The house manager, Kim, is very quick to answer your questions. Highly recommend!
We enjoyed our stay at this cabin! The owner was easy to communicate with. The kitchen had everything we needed and we enjoyed eating dinners on the porch overlooking a beautiful view (the large septic ponds didn’t bother us too much, no smells). The porch area does get a little windy at times and cold at night but our girls loved the electric blankets and said the porch was cozy and fun!
We had fun staying at Hynes cabin. You can see the Harney Peak/ Black Elk peak in the deck. You can even hear the 1880 train.
We did horseback riding and rode the banana bike—tons of things to do around black hills.
I recommend this place specially if you have a small kids.
Booked the cabin to fulfill my mother’s bucket list. Mount Rushmore was to be our adventure. However the cabin sealed our adventures as well. The cabin felt like home so much to see at and around the cabin. The joy of a nightly fire the ability to cook outside and the rocks for the kids to climb on brought everything full circle. Perfect place for families to stay. The greatest besides the camp fire was watching the horses and deer play tag behind the cabin as the sun was setting.
Great place to listen to the rain, watch the sunset and listen to the horses. I will be coming back again.
Cell service was bad and no WiFi at cabin. Yet for me that was perfect. If you are doing any work during your stay you will need to drive to the front
Located overlooking a horse pasture and the iconic Black Elk peak this quaint family owned cabin was just what we were looking for. Well appointed and spacious for our family of 6. The sleeping porch is amazing. You have to drive thru the KOA to get here but its proximity gives access to a LOT of additional amenities. Think pools, bar, multiple restaurants, UTV rentals, horseback trail rides, ice cream, outdoor movies, playgrounds, mini-golf…it is also centrally located to all the things. Mt. Rushmore, Jewel Cave, Custer State Park, are all just a short drive away.
In short, book it, you won’t be disappointed!
Absolutely amazing experience at the cabin. In early June the sleeping porch was perfect for kids, nice and cool in the evening. There were plenty of warm blankets available to use, and the queen bed on the porch had a privacy curtain which was a nice touch for adults staying out there. There was so much history about the cabin and the valley available to read, which was very fun. Kitchen was well stocked, grill was easy to use, and everything went smoothly. We had one question about the shower (you pull down on the faucet to start it if anyone else has trouble), and when I sent a message the manager got back to me immediately. It was a lovely place to stay, and we would definitely visit again!
We took my elderly in-laws and our kids but scheduled it without realizing in advance it was Sturgis week. I checked in at the KOA office to let them know we were going to be at the cabin, but the desk clerk said we didn’t need to check in with them but we’d have to pay to use the pool or rec areas. The owner sent great instructions on how to access the cabin, but I still had to ask for help before I found the obvious sign out front. Oops! The cabin was huge, spacious, clean, and comfortable. Yes, the KOA retention ponds are in view, but have no odor to the cabin and geese, deer, and horses are all frequent visitors around the ponds. Mountain views are a tip of your head upwards! The attached KOA is busy and can be loud, but we did take advantage of their dining facilities and ice cream shop when we couldn’t get in anywhere else due to bike traffic. The beds were comfortable and the extra blankets came in handy for chillier mornings. The kitchen and coffee pot were a blessing! We used the dvd player to unwind with the kids. The kids loved climbing the large rocks and seeing the chipmunks run up the exterior of the fireplace. The cabin was tucked far enough away from the campground that the only real noise was nature and the horses being rounded up, which we enjoyed seeing. We did take the scenic Palmer Gulch Road out the back of the campground to avoid all the foot traffic, and loved the pretty views and winding road into Hill City. We wish we could have stayed longer!
We had an excellent time at the Hynes cabin. The property is extremely well maintained. My kids loved staying at the cabin. I would highly recommend this place.
Great cabin with a fresh air sleeping porch! We enjoyed camp fires, the KOA fun zone, and late night movies back at the cabin. It was a memorable adventure and a return trip!
What a wonderful treasure! This place reminded me of a home I used to visit in the Adirondacks, so it felt nostalgic. The view was amazing. We appreciated the warm bathrooms because we were there with a cold front, and it got really cold. LOVED it here!
