"Clean spacious room, driving up the mountain to get there at night (was also really foggy) was a little precarious. We arrived late evening so the restaurant was no longer open and there is no place close by to get snacks or anything. Had drinks in the bar area which were really good but having a pizza oven or something to heat up or make some appetizers would have really made it better. Staff were very friendly"

Gasthaus Goldener Hirsch

10/10 Excellent

"Enjoyed every bit of the stay. Breakfast was great, restaurant was good, people were excellent"

Hotel Adler

10/10 Excellent

"When I originally booked my stay, comments from previous guests described the decor as old and outdated. I found the opposite. The building is old (German poet Schiller once stayed there), but the room was modern throughout with walk in shower and staff very professional and polite. Breakfast was very good, and the hotel is right on the market square in the heart of the city within easy walking distance of everything. A farmer’s market is in the market square in front of the hotel several times a week as well as a stand with Thuringian bratwurst. A tourist info center by the market square next to city hall (Rathaus) was very helpful. I highly recommend the Adler Hotel in Rudolstadt."

ACHAT Hotel Suhl

8/10 Good

"1. The wash rooms need better cleaning . All taps , handles , flush seat had feel of soap remains , more cleaning required . 2. At Breakfast if an item is finished was not replenished . 3 . Beds of 506 are in poor state , sinking deep . 4 . Pillows in poor state 5. Staff is good and friendly . 6. Location is best located at SUHL"

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Herschdorf?

The best area to stay in Herschdorf is within the village centre itself or the immediately surrounding countryside.Herschdorf is a small, quiet village located in the Thuringian Forest, so the "best area" is less about distinct neighbourhoods and more about finding accommodation within the village or its peaceful outskirts. The village is compact, with its main road, L1048, running through it, connecting a few local guesthouses and holiday flats. You'll find a church, a local inn, and a few houses dotted around. For couples looking for a tranquil escape, staying in a guesthouse in the village centre offers convenience. You'll be able to easily access the local walking trails directly from your accommodation and enjoy the calm of village life. Many guesthouses here offer a cosy, traditional experience, often with home-cooked meals. For families, a holiday flat or a larger guesthouse on the edge of the village, perhaps with a garden, would be ideal. These often provide more space for children to play and direct access to the surrounding fields and forests, great for exploring.

When is the best time to go to Herschdorf?

The best time to visit Herschdorf is during the late spring (May to early June) or early autumn (September to early October) when the weather is pleasant and the Thuringian Forest is particularly scenic.During late spring, the days are longer and the temperatures are mild, making it ideal for outdoor activities like hiking and cycling. The local flora is in full bloom, adding to the beauty of the surrounding landscape. It's a great time for couples to enjoy strolls through the forest trails and explore the quaint villages nearby without the peak summer crowds.Early autumn also offers comfortable temperatures and the added spectacle of changing leaves, creating a stunning backdrop for exploration. This period is great for those who appreciate cooler weather for walking and want to experience the region's natural beauty at its most colourful.
