About this property
South Shore Chalet | Hot Tub and Game Room
South Shore Chalet is your family fun destination on Bark Point: three bedrooms, a gorgeous loft (with more sleeping space if you need it), indoor and outdoor hangouts galore, plus a game room. The Chalet is packed with creature comforts: a dream kitchen, a hot tub on the back deck, a dedicated workspace, and laundry on site. It's all in a woodsy setting with plenty of room for outdoor frolicking, minutes from Lake Superior beaches and close to Cornucopia and Bayfield and the Apostle Islands.
Your host runs Bark Point Ventures, a vacation rental management & concierge company that specializes in properties on Lake Superior's South Shore. She lives nearby and is available 24/7 to assist her guests. Our passion is ensuring guests experience the magic of what we feel is one of the most amazing places in the world.
South Shore Chalet is on Bark Point, a spit of land that extends several miles out into Lake Superior. There's a boat landing nearby where you can check out the bay behind the point, and you're also just a few minutes from the beautiful estuary at the head of the bay. To get your feet wet in the lake there’s no better spot than Herbster Beach, which is just a few minutes down the road.
The other South Shore towns, Port Wing to the west and Cornucopia to the east, are both close by, both with their own beaches. Port Wing has an awesome coffee shop that roasts its own beans (we stock them in the house) and a great little convenience store with a fish counter. Cornucopia (or ‘Corny' as the locals call it) has an excellent coffee shop, a general store, and a few restaurants and shops. It can be a little more crowded, but it's got a few more amenities, too. Bayfield is close by, too, about 45 minutes’ drive: perfect to check out the attractions over there then return to your South Shore oasis for another Superior sunset. Ashland, where you’ll find more stores and amenities, is just under an hour away. Duluth and Superior are about and hour and a quarter to the west.
The South Shore The south shore is truly a place to get away from it all, but not so far from modern conveniences that getting food and gas feel like a chore. The guest book contains tips on all the incredible outdoor activities, local arts, and places to get groceries, dine out, grab a drink, etc. This is truly a year-round destination, whether you enjoy outdoor activities, local cuisine, art, or simply the company of friends & family in one of the most beautiful locations in the northern U.S.
The home is just a few minutes from the center of Cornucopia, which has a delightful general store/market, awesome coffee shop, bar/restaurant, and marina. Bayfield is about 35 minutes away, as is Washburn (where the largest grocery store is in the area). Ashland is about 45 minutes away (which has a natural foods co-op, Wal-Mart, and wider range of shops). Superior & Duluth are an hour and a bit away.
We love this property for groups & families, as it has separate living rooms on each level, large kitchen, two full baths, three bedrooms, and even a laundry room! It’s the perfect place in which to rest, recharge, and reconnect with your loved ones (but with more than enough room to get alone time when you need it).
The home is nestled into a 3 acre wooded lot, which gives you peace & quiet, but is just a short walk, bike, or car ride to a hidden beach, Bark Bay Slough (for the best kayaking & canoeing around), and Herbster Beach.
Detailed Overview Careful attention to detail is evident from the moment you walk in the front door. Both the home’s owners and the host come from farming families, which means you’ll experience the most warm & welcoming hospitality possible. Enjoy a seat on the handmade bench in the front hall and kick your shoes off, then head on into the great room to relax. The great room provides an open-plan layout for the downstairs living room, dining area, and kitchen.
The living room is spacious & airy, with a large comfy couch and two comfy club chairs. The dining table seats 6-8 comfortably. And the kitchen is just plain awesome: fully outfitted with everything you need to cook and bake to your heart’s desire, and even a dishwasher to make clean up a breeze. If you, like us, are an InstantPot fan, you’ll be in luck. You’ll also find every other small appliance you may need.
The kitchen’s sliding glass doors open out onto a back deck sitting area, the hot tub, and the large back yard, which has a hammock for lazy days and a fire pit for summer nights.
The first floor also has two queen bedrooms, a full bath (with bathtub!), and laundry room.
Make your way upstairs to what we think is the jewel of the home: a gorgeous & HUGE additional living room with soaring ceilings, comfy couches, large-screen smart tv, gaming/informal dining table, gas fireplace, and even a desk for working with a view of the woods out back. You’ll also find games for folks of all ages, and even a piano. This area also has two twin beds.
The upstairs bedroom has a queen bed and twin trundle. Across the hall is another full bathroom.
All of the furnishings, mattresses, kitchen items, and decor are crisp & brand-new. And you’ll love all the thoughtful touches like charging stations & cables in every room, cozy throws, comfy bedding, and accoutrements to make adult, child, and canine guests feel extra welcome.
The property’s most unique feature is the awesome game room (or as we like to call it, the “kid cave”). The owners have turned the large heated garage into an all-season game & hangout space. You’ll find comfy furniture, a picnic table, and of course, the games: ping pong, Skee-Ball, and foosball. Our apologies if you have to pry the kids out of this room in order to get them to go out and hike. ;-)
Due to the lack of public transportation and the distance between towns/amenities, a car is pretty much essential. But, on the plus side, traffic is not a concept we have up here!
This home is in the north woods: seasonal pests/bugs can be expected. This home is dog friendly: While we make a considerable effort to clean up pet hair between guests, there may still be a few stray hairs in the home. *Hot tub is available year-round with exceptions when it is zero degrees out or below zero. Hot-tub use not recommended for children or for adults who are pregnant, under the influence, or who may have a health condition such as high blood pressure that is contraindicated. This is a great spot for the whole family to gather. Fun activities all around. Everything was clean and organized. Made for a relaxing stay. We would stay at this spot again.
What a lovely home in a perfectly quiet part of Lake Superior. We greatly enjoyed our visit. Very cold weather but the hot tub was the perfect remedy for that.
This was one of the cleanest places I’ve ever stayed in and stocked with so many convenient items to make our stay enjoyable! I would highly recommend this property to everyone!!
We had a great time! The house was perfect for our family. The younger kids really enjoyed having the upstairs space all to themselves. The swing was one of the highlights for them. All of us really enjoyed the hot tub in the evenings. The kitchen was very nicely stocked and the host was very responsive and super friendly!
A great place away from it all, but close enough to do things if you want to leave the property. The house was great, room for everyone to have some space and yet to come together for meals, play games (let's not forget the game room), so there is plenty to do. Yet close enough to find a beach or two, trails to hike and not that far from Bayfield if you want to take a boat cruise and see the Apostle Islands and some lighthouse.
Great trip and a great place to stay!
We spent a week at this wonderful property. It has everything you could possible want for a week in the woods, with the added benefit of being surrounded by great hiking and kayaking. Our dog enjoyed exploring the property and we enjoyed exploring the waterfalls, trails, and local area. Bug spray is a must, but don't let the bugs deter you from this excellent vacation hideaway.
Excellent space for family. Mosquitoes require spraying to enjoy outdoor area. Hot tub was enjoyed by all. Game area was fun spot. Spent 5 nights and visited Herbster, Cornucopia, and Bayfield. All very close.
Excellent South Shore stay! Comfy beds and close to everything
We stayed here with 2 adults and 2 kids (13 and 10). The main level bedrooms both had blackout curtains, which my kids greatly appreciated. The lower level bedrooms stayed cool. The beds were all very comfortable!
The house was clean and well equipped. We had everything we needed! The location was great, we did day trips to Bayfield, Madeline Island, Washburn, and some local hikes.
Erin was so helpful suggesting places to go. Cornucopia had a great coffee shop.
My husband worked from the VRBO for a bit and the WiFi was great.
The upstairs bedroom did get a little warm and stuffy at night, which was the only drawback and definitely not a deal breaker. They had fans and that helped.
I would DEFINITELY stay here again and will be definitely going back to this area. We had an absolute blast. Highly recommend a trip to Herbster and staying in one of Erin’s properties
The chalet was perfect for our Girls Weekend. It had plenty of room and the kitchen was well stocked with what we needed. Location was great too, close enough to the action in Bayfield but far enough away for some peace and quiet. Herbster and Corny are great towns. Lovely beaches and enough restaurants for what we needed as well.
We only wished we had booked another night! It was the perfect getaway:) The upstairs is absolutely stunning...very much the perfect space for KIDS! It was clean, spacious & I noticed all the little details that made it so comfortable. Would absolutely stay here again ! Communication with the owners was incredible too , we thank you for hosting us! :)
We had an amazing time staying at this VRBO over a long weekend to celebrate my husband’s birthday. The home is beautiful, clean, and the host has thought of every detail - for adults, kids, and fur babies 🙂! We loved the spacious upstairs with room to play games, enjoy the views, and cozy up to watch a movie.
We spent one day exploring - hiking along local trails and checking out shops/ restaurants in Bayfield. Everything was within a 30-40 minute drive and though our visit was during the off-season, we had a great time and can’t wait to be back!
This house is just like the pictures, warm cozy, natural light, and the sky windows giving you all the beautiful stars. The host was so sweet to check in on us , she also let us go in a hour earlier since out timing was a bit off. Lots of trails near by and the deers walking by made my son so happy. Thank for letting us create memories
This property was everything we were hoping for. It was adorable, and very clean!! It was close enough for activities in Bayfield, but far enough for quiet at the end of the day.
Erin was very responsive and the epitome of customer service. She has renewed my faith that there are still people out there that care about the customer experience!!
Highly recommend.
Thank you Erin for raising the bar in CS!!
Beautiful place, great location near Lake Superior!
We went to Erin's cabin in March 2023, a group of four adults/two couples. Erin was super friendly, responded promptly to my messages prior to the trip and was available during our trip as well. Check-in was super easy and check-out instructions were conveniently placed in the cabin. All kitchen amenities worked well and was well stocked with equipment. All other cabin amenities were also awesome, especially the hot tub and the game room--even though we were there during winter, everything stayed warm with their central air and heating systems. The snow was DEEP so no bonfires, but it was still a wonderful stay--great location, remote and quiet, but not too far away from Superior, and many nature sightings! I will also note that our group was all people of color from Minnesota and overall we felt safe and welcomed in this beautiful cabin. 10/10 would come back!
