Kind and warm staff. They go beyond expectations. I was welcomed with a warm dinner just in case I missed it as the area around Shin-Hakodate station has no convenience stores or restaurants. A pleasant experience that I want to repeat in the near future.
The hotel is brand new, and right across the road from the new Shinkansen station. However there is NOTHING else around the station except for another hotel and a couple of car rental places. Make sure you eat in town before heading back to the hotel. To offset this, the hotel puts on a light dinner meal and a full breakfast.
The washing machines work well and the rooms were as expected.
Clean rooms, thoughtful staff, and very eco-friendly chain. As for the property, it’s located right next to the Shinkansen station, so big plus there for travellers relying on this as a layover point!
This hotel was a convenient distance from the railway and places to dine and buy souvenirs. There was hardly any traffic either and was placed across the road from a car rental. We found the staff to be friendly and professional and the premises to be of good quality and cleanliness but the beds were too hard for us.
Convenient hotel with modern features. Automatic check-in and laundry machines are available. My room was thoughtfully designed to make the most of the space.
Amazing location, right outside of the Shin-Aomori station with access to the shinkansen and Hakodate line. Breakfast had quite the variety and vending machines are available in the lobby. I also saw laundry facilities for those packing light. Staff were polite and although not very fluent in English, they had a device for speech to text translation. Best part was the ease of check-in and check-out - all automated so there wasn't any concern with arriving late or leaving early.
Due to no other fault than my own, I missed my Shinkansen from Shin-Hakodate to Tokyo during one the busiest times of the year (New Year's holiday). I needed a place to stay near Shin-Hakodate station for the night until I could figure out how I would be getting back to Tokyo. Thank God I stumbled across this gem! Seriously, after booking this hotel, I am now looking for their chain hotels in other prefectures.
PROS:
Not only was it less than $50 a night (during peak holiday season) but it was like a 2 minute walk from Shin-Hakodate station, with Taxi's right outside the station if needed.
The room was actually bigger than most budget hotels I've stayed at in Japan and it was kept very clean.
Customer service was great. Ladies working the food area are extremely friendly. Loved them!
They're able to hold your luggage before/after checkout. Oh! The food! Okay it's no breakfast buffet at the Ritz, but your breakfast is included AND they offer free curry and rice at night! If your aim is the save money, I would recommend this hotel in a heartbeat. With all the money you saved, you could treat yourself to an amazing kaisendon somewhere haha!
CONS:
I think the only drawback is, there's nothing really around the station. You would have to take a 15-20 minute train ride to Hakodate where there are more things to do, see and eat.
But other than that, if you need a place to rest for the night before taking your Shinkansen, I would definitely recommend this place.
We stayed at the Toyoko Inn Hokkaido Shinhakodatehokuto-eki Minami near Hakodate located right next to the train station on April 21, 2025.
Before our arrival, we emailed reception to request an earlier check in time and they replied saying it was no problem and that we just have to pay 1000 Yen. Great! However….when we arrived, the man at the front desk had no idea what we were talking about but eventually he agreed to let us in after paying this amount.
Strike one.
The next morning, our train was due to leave at 6:21 am. Breakfast is served at 6:30 am. The breakfast was all laid out in the eating area ready to go and we politely asked if it would be ok if we ate 26 minutes earlier than their actual start time seeing as it was ready. We were at reception at 6:04 am exactly and we politely explained to the same man at the front desk as yesterday that my wife is pregnant and needs to eat frequently or she will feel sick and get low blood sugar and that our train leaves at 6:21 am so we cannot wait for 6:30 and it is almost a 4 hour journey. He was very rude and inhospitable and would make zero exceptions! He had zero understanding and didn’t seem to care at all that she was pregnant and that we were just asking to have a small amount of food before we left. He even had the nerve to laugh at us when we told him that was not very hospitable. We just couldn’t understand what the problem was as the food was all prepared and ready and sitting at the buffet area. We paid for the
It’s close to the Shinkansen which suited my needs. Not much in immediate the area as others have noted but it is only a 20 minute train trip into Hakodate.
Hotel was clean, beds are hard. Nothing around food wise, but they let us know before arriving via message which was great. English was on the display along with Japanese for any travelers. We came via car, parking was good.
Fantastic view, minutes away from the Shinkansen and local Jr lines, ample parking space, There are not many food options around the local konbini closes at 20:00 so make sure to either make the dinner service come right away the delicious curry goes very fast, or bring some food with you. 10/10 would stay again
